I hope I am not posting this question in the wrong forum. I just found this site while trying to find the manufacture date of a smith model 28-2. A friend of mine has a 28-2 6" barrel he thought I may be interested in that he received from a client. The revolver is in like new condition and he was told it had only been shot 5-10 times. The serial number is n7283 and inside the box the date April 15 1955 is written. I have been unable to find in any of my books if that date is realistic or not. My friend wants me to make him an offer on the revolver and I don't want to low ball him nor do I want to over pay. What would be a reasonable offer and any ideas on manufacture date.

It probably shipped around 1969 to 1970.

Does it have the paperwork and cleaning tools?

As far as I know it has every thing that came with it new. I have only seen pictures of it and it was still in original box and wrapped in the brown paper. What year did the "n" prefix start and would the 7283 indicate the order it was manufactured?

N prefix started in 1969.

If the gun has no blemishes and includes all of the original items, I think $650 to $700 is fair.

Just an fyi.... the little baggie with the screwdriver (sight adjustment tool), cleaning rod, mop, and brush will fetch about $50 on eBay. Keep that in mind if they are missing.

ky blue...Model 28-2 with serial number N925 shipped in May 1970 so your revolver probably shipped in the last few months of that year. The N prefix was first used in 1970 on a Model 28-2 with serial number N1.

I trust your information, but it often varies a bit from the SCS&W. I think the book could use some updating.
