Default Help needed on 1967 and 1968 prices...

I'm in the process of putting together some data for an article on the Model 28 Highway Patrolman. I have four of them; two have been in my family for quite a while.

I purchased my 6" Model 28 in early 1967, according to my records, for $110 out the door from a gun shop in Phoenix. Here's a pic of it. The stocks I've had for many years, picked up at a gun show - they are slightly modified coke smoothies in rosewood - very comfortable.

I purchased another one, a 4" model, for my dad in March of 1968, as he wanted me to pick one up for him to use for home defense. In both cases, I selected from among several for the smoothest action and best lockup.

My dad's revolver is illustrated here. It came with magna stocks, but I also purchased the target style stocks at the same time as the gun. The dealer still had pre-1968 walnut diamonds in stock, and that's what the gun has worn ever since. I still have the original box, stocks, sight adjustment screwdriver and instruction sheet for it, but I didn't record what I paid for it. I equipped both his gun and mine with a trigger shoe for best feel in single-action let-off. Both guns still wear them.

At any rate, the information I'd like to include in the article would be the suggested retail prices for Model 28s and Model 27s for both 1967 and 1968. If any of you can come up with that information, I'd appreciate you posting it here.

Many thanks -

John

The closest I could find was 1964. $85 with Magna stocks, $90 with target stocks for the Model 28.
Model 27 blue or nickle $120. Model 29 blue or nickle $140. Model 19 blue or nickle $110.

The 1968 Gun Digest (which likely reflected 1967 suggested retail prices) shows the Model 28 price at $93 with service stocks and $99 with target stocks. For the 1969 GD (1968 prices), the corresponding numbers are $98 and $105. I bought one in late 1970 with target stocks for $125, but I no longer have it.

1967 issue of Gun Digest lists the Highway Patrolman at $93.00. With target stocks, $99.00.

I bought my 6" md 28-2 with magnas NIB in Oct 1966 for $75 from a
gun shop that sold a variety of guns and reloading supplies. The shop
routinely discounted everything they sold with no haggling required.

Thanks, guys, for responding. In the back of my head I was thinking the prices were in that neighborhood, but it's good to have confirmation. I appreciate ya!

That information tells you something about inflation over the last 45 years.

Happy my wages went up over 2000% since then so today's prices don't seem too bad.

Back in those days, I was only a couple of years out of college and just married. I think I was making about $700/month before taxes, etc. in the mid-late 1960s. My first new car was a 67 VW Beetle, cost me $1645.

That $1645 is not too far out of line for a 1967 Model 27 these days...
