Default S&W 27vs28

Other than the exterior differences between the 27 and 28 are there any differences in the action. Does the 27 have a better trigger pull in general? I know this would vary from gun to gun but just comparing both models how much difference, if any, would there be? Thanks.

In my humble opinion it is as you stated. The exterior finish is the only difference that I can tell on the ones I currently own and the ones I have owned in the past. Now you start talking about the how it feels in your hand difference in a 4 inch 28 and a 3.5 inch 27 and the 27 wins hands down.

The only differences are visual. The innards are the same.

The 27 always feels a little better to me than does the 28 but that could be just me. Doesn't make it any less real, though.

I have 2 each of 27s and 28s.
Of the lot, the best, most accurate shooter is the 6" 28-2.

I don't have a 27, but my 28-2 is very accurate and has a great trigger.

I just had one of my 28-2s drilled and tapped for a scope mount. While it was apart I fitted a target trigger and Wolff spring kit. The machining in the frame where the rebound slide travels was extremely rough with very deep and pronounced milling cutter marks. Took quite some time to polish it down to where the rebound slide moved smoothly. Definitely a big difference from my two model 27-2s.

I have a M28 4" and came across a very neat M27 once a long time ago. Apart from the folly of youth, the reason I didn't go for it was that I knew my M28 was very accurate and had a great trigger. That said, the M27 is mighty nice.

If I remember the factory and some owners would tell you that the M-27's got special assembly fittings, who knows?

For me, and I suspect many, the main difference between the M-27 and M-28 is the fact that with the M-27's I own the finest production revolver produced.

I own one 5" 27-2, and 4 Highway Patrolman variants. All my HPs have great triggers, as does my 27. There appears to be no noticeable difference (to me at least) when I remove a side plate. The best trigger on all of them resides in my 1955 HP, probably as a result of 49 years of firing.

You really can't go wrong with either one!

Default M27 or M28 ?

The question is why are you considering the purchase, you want a gun for appearance (show) or to shoot (Meaning that they are the same)? You will not find any appreciable difference between the M-27 & the M-28 as far as the internal parts but if you want to upset the M-27 shooters whip them with a M-28. Oh, sorry, most folks are shooting the Semi-Auto now!

I have two 27-2s, a 3.5" and a 6". They're the best .357s I've ever owned.

That being said, I wouldn't mind having a 28, just to have one.

I must disagree

While there is a difference in the finish, the model 27s also have the checkered top-straps and sights. OK we can call that "visual", but that is a great touch. The checkering breaks up any reflection in bright sunlight.

However, I can not consider the triggers and hammers to be "exterior differences"

I love the wider triggers and hammers as opposed to the narrow trigger the model 28 shipped with. A .400 or .500 trigger makes the single action feel like it is breaking much lighter because the weight of the pull is placed against a much larger portion of the finger.

Will both the model 27 and model 28 put a 357 projectile down range?....yes.

Will they be equally effective when needed?.....Yes

Just like a paper cup and a crystal goblet can both be used to drink from

I own 2 very nice model 28s that I never shoot. A 4" and a 6" just so they are in the collection. I did change the grips on them

I have many 27/327/627s and have put 10s of thousands of rounds downrange with them. One or more goes to the range with me 25+ times a year.

Even have the 75th anniversary 357

There is nothing wrong with owning a model 28, but I want my firearm to look as good as it performs.

Looks are important, even to those folks that will not admit it.

If looks were not important we would not ask for the percentage of finish when buying a used revolver.

If looks were not important we would all be driving Hugos painted in primer grey.

I am kind of surprised that S&W did not rationalize their lineup on cosmetic features.
I would not mind a 27 with serrated rib and sight leaf, matte topstrap, etc., like a 29, etc.
But I am sure that a lot of purists would miss their checkering. Not me, I can't see the topstrap or rib through the sights, so there is no reflection to break up from my point of view.

I go round and round with the 1911 dressers who checker their non-grasping areas, too.
