my m28 HP
One of my s&w m28-6" blue has a turn line on the cylinder. It's completely around the cylinder. Does it matter? The timing and loc up is ok. Does the loc cam need to be addressed?
I was thinking of sending it to s&w to fix it and nickel it. I know we been through this nickel thing before. Well maybe reblue then.

That is completely normal. No need to reblue, as the line will return from normal use.

Hmmm...just had a thought.
I realized some time ago that the turn line is more evident on newer guns than on older ones. Back when craftsmen fitted the internals on revolvers they made sure the guns were timed to avoid letting the cylinder stop ride over the cylinder causing the turn line. As less time was spent on hand fitting, the guns developed more defined turn lines. My guns from the 1950s have the barest whisper of a line, while my 25-2 made in 1980 has an absolute gouge running around the cylinder. Would be interesting to compare a large number of 27s and 28s to see if any difference can be noted in the degree of turn lines exhibited as it may suggest more care in assembly. Or do I not want to go there again?
Anyway, refinishing a revolver to remove a turn line would not be cost effective (if money means nothing to you then do as you please) and you would have to utterly retire the gun to prevent the turn line from developing again. As for plating a 28, again, it's your money. I like the shiny guns. There's certainly no shortage of nickel 28s out there. I've seen maybe a hundred or so...all said to be factory original.

J.M.O. but you have nothing to gain by getting refinished in nickel or blue. (other than it will look nicer for the time being) You have your investment, and refinishing can hurt the value. I have a nice 28 no dash, 6". It has a turn line, and I think nothing of it. Shoot & enjoy your gun! Bob
