Model 57! (feels weird posting in the '61-80 forum)
Years ago after I got into guns I discovered the .41 magnum. I really liked the round in my Redhawk so I thought I should buy a model 57. I did, but it never really pleased me somehow. It was from the late 1980s and it just didn't... work. I mean, it was a fine gun but I never had an emotional connection to it.
After I discovered the difference between early Model 29s/57s and later guns, Cokes, finish, fit, everything, I decided to sell my model 57 and find one that I could love.
4 years later...
So Roy says this shipped April of '64, making it C&R, which is awesome, and saved me some transfer fees.
Took some quick and dirty photos of it. I'm wondering if any of you guys can confirm the letter saying that Buddy Hackett owned it for me. I bought it because I wanted a great early shooter model 57, not because it was owned by Buddy. In fact, I totally didn't expect to win it on my bid. I assumed someone would outbid me. They didn't, life is good.
Edit:
those were too quick and dirty, they annoy me. Here's some other quick photos taken out in my greenhouse:

Yeah, it would seem Buddy had a very large gun collection, and good taste too.

The best part of your buy!
Sir, you did not mention the best part of your buy! That would be the case! Those case liners were used in the first year of production of the model 57. It is my belief that they were use for approx. 6 months! It is the only liner type used in the Mahogany Presentation Cases that did not deteriorate over time. I have ONE case like yours and I would not sell it for less than $500! Very nice find!

And that is why I post this stuff. I always learn something whenever I post things on this forum. I knew the box was dang nice, I didn't know it was that rare though. Thanks for making me feel even better about the purchase.

I would trust the Collectors Firearms letter to be accurate. I used to buy from them, but not so much anymore. Their prices seem higher now than what I see selling on GB.
Here's mine. One of my first revolvers, and glad I got it when I did. You don't see these too much anymore. I agree about the case being special. Too bad they didn't last long.

I find this forum very interesting and I can ask a dumb question without being heckled. There's a lot of respect for each other.
I wonder if Buddy ever shot it?
I think everyone should own a s&w in 41 magnum. It's part of the magnum history.

Based on the wear on the gun and what I have read about Buddy, I'm pretty sure he shot it quite a bit.

Model 57 with a scarce nickel finish and shipped in January 1965 in a mahogany case with a velour lining. Click on the photo for a better look.

Incredible. Once in a while something pops up that I have never seen, and you just did it. Totally awesome.

When it rains it pours
This was the gun I wanted in the first place, but I had a heck of a time finding one for anything approaching reasonable.
Of course, as soon as I settle for the 6" (which isn't really settling, I love it too), this pops up in my local shop...

Yeah it was actually, this gun never hit the floor though, I saw it come in and had them toss my name on it.
It had square butt combats on it too, but I quickly fixed that.

Very nice score! I like the 4" gun more but having them as a pair is pretty cool.

Indeed, goes well with my pre-29 too.
The collection is really coming together nicely overall.

I have seen several articles over the years about Buddy Hackett's gun collection, and he was a shooter, not just a collector.

No doubt about it when handling this gun, that's a big part of what attracted me to it, I like guns that I can shoot without feeling guilty.
