Default Model 10 serial numbers and mystery markings

I am new to S&W Forum and I appreciate all the help on this question. I just purchased a 2" Model 10, round butt,
serial # C515***.
It has U.S. stamped midway down the grip back strap.
It also has a 3 digit number engraved on the rear of the cylinder face and same number also engraved on the crane. The engravings are uniform and are well done.
Any ideas on what year it was made and what the other markings are?

I don't show a really close SN in my list, but from what i do have, I'd estimate shipment of yours was probably made in late 1960 to early 1961.

Welcome! You may have a US military contract model 10, and if you inclined to find out it would be worth sending for a factory historical letter to confirm this. If you are able a photo of the backstrap and other stampings would be nice to see. Hope this is helpful.

I believe Alan (murphydog) has given you a likely match. There was a batch of Model 10s in the C51X,XXX serial number range with U.S. on the backstrap that were shipped to Robins Air Force Base in Georgia in late 1960 - early 1961.

I'm away from home right now and don't have my notes with me but remember enough to urge you to take Alan's suggestion and send for a factory letter.

I just wanted to say thanks very much for all of the information I've gotten from you all.
I will try to get a factory historical letter and see what happens from there.
I'll let you know what happens.
