Default 357 model 28-2 Serial Numbers

I'm new to this forum and in fact new to handguns. I have owned rifles and shotguns most of my adult life but just bought my first revolver. It is a model 28-2 with a 6" barrel in very nice condition. All of the info I have seen lists the serial #s. as a letter and 6 digits. My SN is N276xx. As I stated, I'm new and maybe just misunderstood what I was reading. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Yours would likely have been made in 1971. The N-series began with N1, but most (90%) would have 6 digits for obvious reasons.
N1 – N60,000…………........1970-72
N60,001 – N 190,000…....1972-74
N190,001 – N430,000…...1975–77, etc.

Eagle, welcome to the forum. You have picked a fine revolver for your first.
In .357/.38 you could do far worse, but not much better. A little prettier maybe, but no better.

It, as your first, only has one drawback, which all the S&W experts and novices alike, agree on......It will likely require more Smith & Wesson revolvers, to the detriment of your purse.
Hope you like your Highway Patrolman !

Good way to start! My very first S&W was also a Model 28, albeit with a 4" barrel. My brother had a K-22 before that, which I shot a lot. But when it came to getting my first one, it was a Highway Patrolman.
I don't want to tell you how many more I've had (and have) since that time, nearly 50 years ago.

As rog8732 wrote, you can't stop now!

Thanks to everyone. I just picked my Highway Patrolman up from the FFL today (after California's 10 day wait rule) and haven't even fired it yet. Just reading up on it and checking the gun out already makes me think about what my next one will be. rog8732 was right. My wife and my purse might try to slow me down but we'll see...

A 28-2 was my first revolver too. That was back in 1972. My second was a 28-2 as well. Unfortunately the first one was stolen so a few months later I went by the gun store and they had another so I bought it and still have today. It has the target stocks on it and a trigger shoe and I love the way it shoots.

Welcome to the Forum! Although not my 1st revolver, I have a 28 no dash, 6" from 1960. They are like tanks! I shot it recently, and it reminded me how much I like the gun! Enjoy yours! Bob

Those #'s and letters on the grip frame are fitters and inspector marks. They mean nothing once the gun leaves the factory.

I believe the 28 depicted in the photo was the one carried by Bigfoot.

Eagle, Congrats on your selection of a model 28. You will not be disappointed. They are a less fancy M27.

Just one word f caution, they can be addicting

I am on my third 28-2, an “S” prefix serial number 4”. It goes nicely with my 27-2 6”.
