The Model 27 Three and one half inch BBL
I think this was the finest revolver made by S&W and my favorite for sure. I carried this on duty and sold it, *** to cheap long ago. But for whatever reason the short barrel was dropped and it remains my favorite of all. Comments?

Guy's if you really want an M-27 3 1/2" get one now, they keep going up in price. By waiting three (3) years it cost me and extra $600.00 to finally get my 3 1/2".

I really couldn't afford to buy this when I did but I have ZERO regrets.
And it does get carried occasionally.

I have never seen one of these "in the wild."
If I had it would have been domesticated in short order, if there was any way to achieve that.
The closest I've come to any M27 is my M28. It's a former duty gun from Pueblo, CO. I bought it while they were still cheap.

You would be in the majority opinion. The 3.5" 27 and variants are very popular.
The 3.5" pre-27 I saw at the show on Saturday wearing diamond targets at $850 was probably a pretty good deal (I would immediately separate those stocks in favor of Magnas as the targets are much too big to look good with the short barrel and and don't bother arguing with me I'm right about this). But I already have two 3.5" pre-27s and another 27-2 so I wasn't interested.
BTW- I have just under a grand invested in all three. Paid $350 for the blue 27-2, $275 for the blue pre-27, and $350 for the nickel pre-27.

Looking at what they go for and as big as CCW mania is these days I do not know why they don't bring back the 3.5" model and maybe even offer it in the eight shot version as well. They did the 4" model a few years back in the eight shot version but I guess they didn't sell that well. I bet the 3.5" would sell better.

Arguing over opinions is an exercise in futility, but presenting an opinion as fact is another thing altogether

Well, they brought the Night Guard 8-shot snubby out and it was not a success, blame cheap high cap semi-autos. To be fair, it is not finished anywhere like the old 27s.
The cost to make one of blued steel, hand fitted and finished similar to the old ones would be cost prohibitive.

There's currently a 4" 27 offered, but it's more a 28 than 27 as far as the topstrap and finish are concerned.
Product: Model 27
The 3.5 certainly has the best lines and proportions, especially in the pre models with the dehorned muzzle and rounded lug.

I've wondered why the 3.5 barrel was so exclusive to the M27. When they were making the 21-4 and 22-4, I thought the 3.5 would have been ideal on them. I would have liked for the LH N-frames to have that extra half inch, and full ejector rod.

I agree, the 3 1/2" N Frame is one of the best balanced revolvers I own, unfortunately, the values have gone us so much I do not shoot it very often, and now find myself at the range with a (ugh) plastic framed wonder nine. But the Shield does grow on you also.

It is my favorite barrel length
I'm very glad it wasn't totally exclusive

Not using it is a disservice.
Using it and maintaining it properly isn't hurting anything unless it's NIB.
N frames are the most enduring revolvers out there.
Don't make excuses for enjoying your tupperwear

I guess I better join the party too! Here are my two 3.5 Pre Md 27s. The nickel shipped in 1950 and the blued shipped ca. 1956.

Rick A-
Given the fact that I have degrees in art and in art history, and have studied design and composition, I would argue that my opinions on aesthetics are EXPERT opinions. I say that the target stocks on a 3.5" N frame are unbalanced, are too big for the rest of the gun, and that's my EXPERT opinion. Of course you or anyone else can offer your opinion in disagreement. But I will stand by my EXPERT opinion.

Interesting the short barrel varients fetch a premium as the NT357 really shines on the range vs as a CCW .

Ahhh, the good old days!
There certainly are some fair deals still out there with diligent searching. I bought this one around 5 years ago for about double of one of your guns and was happy.

Lew Horton sold a "Registered Magnum" Model 27 from the Performance Center in a 3 1/2 barrel that was a 8 shot revolver. There was a nickel one on GB while back, that was a reasonable BIN ($1500.??) Didn't sell, probably more like me, just couldn't get past that Hillery hole.

I had watched that one as well. It was up for some time. The cylinder ratchet on those 8's just look so delicate. It may just be a mental hang up, but I have seen one "tweeked" inexplicably. The top straps on those appear to be laser etched instead of checkered which is a bit tacky. The bluing isn't as nice as older guns, either. The hole I can live with.

Heck, I might as well jump on the band wagon too. Here's
my first year of production, pre-27 with a 3.5" bbl. and factory
nickel finish with a set of aged ivory magnas. The H.H. Heiser
holster was made in 1950 for this particular handgun. It came
with special order items such as the hammer guard, rawhide
stitching and an optional belt snap loop on the back.

Not in matters of composition. Strict rules apply. Balance, tension, focal points, more complicated than you would first imagine.
On egotist, well, learn something new everyday. Add that to donator. I was surprised to learn that's a word.
I like "When I want your opinion I'll beat it out of you."

I have had my art on display at a major art gallery in New York City. Lever House. You may have heard of it. In fact, it won an award. May I call myself an art expert or do I need the degree?

Function comes first.
Bottom line is that aesthetics need to be blended with practicality. The best looking stocks on short N frames are the service style in my opinion, but they sure suck to do any kinda real shooting with, even with a grip adapter.
Everything is a compromise. Art is no good if it bruises your hand. If I wanna look at a gun with prettier stocks I've got the pictures.

While I find Magnas or Service grips slightly more aesthetically pleasing on the 3.5"ers my XL fingers demand targets or presentation grips on the range.

I am "down" to two 3.5" M27-2s. Both are shooters with the blue (1967 Utah Highway Patrol marked) being my favorite. Great guns.

Yes sir,it is. It is true however that many among the intelligentsia may prefer "egoist". I simply prefer the former. As far as you know,or rather in your "expert" opinion,is there an alternative for this one as well?

I can't stand the service style under any circumstances. Looks or comfort they suck for me. GMAC- Do you know the rules of art? Or are you making it up as you go?

Art has no rules and knows no boundaries.

One man's arrogance is another man's confidence. You really seem to dislike me. Good thing I don't care.

I think that there is a difference between confidence and abrasiveness.

I bought my one and only 27-2 from a co-worker in 2006. He was selling his "Dad's .357" and wanted to get the full $325 asking price. No haggling required.

I'll take it back...the service stocks look best on the fixed sight guns...the magnas definitely look better on target sighted guns.
