Thoughts on this Model 29-2
Hello all,
I am STRONGLY thinking about purchasing this Model 29-2 44 mag. It appears to be in MINT condition and was manufactured in 1980 with the following S/N N621676.
Just looking for some input and thoughts on value and price I should/should not pay.
Thanks

I just sold (OK, its SPF at the moment but no reason to think it won't go thru) an excellent condition 29-2, 6.5in, N38825x, via Gunbroker for $1,250 + $50 shipping. And mine didn't have a box or papers.
And the one you are looking at seems even more pristine than mine was.
Good luck.

If you want it as a collectible, my opinion would be to buy asap.
If you want a shooter, find something else; meaning, in less condition than this pristine model.
One of my regrets in collecting was selling one exactly like you posted about 10 years ago for $700.00. It was truly 99% condition, with absolutely no cylinder drag line visible, no muzzle wear, nadda. As near perfect as I or anyone could tell.
These are getting harder to find in this condition. To keep as a collectible, go for it. If intending to use it much, I'd buy something else.

Buy it for what it costs.
Shoot it from time to time.
10 years from now it'll be worth more than you paid.

I would expect to pay around $ 1,500 , give or take a hundo in either direction. Personally, I would NOT shoot this gun . It's too nice.

If the price is right buy and if you want it buy it because it's in excellent condition from your pictures and there aren't many in that condition around. To shoot it or not is entirely your decision that you can make after you get it.

Are you a collector, a Shooter, or a Collector who shoots?
As others have said, if you buy that, it shouldn't be shot. It looks as close to NIB as one can be.
$1600 would not be unreasonable, $2000 would still be in the ball park.
Me Personally, I would consider it, if I were a collector. Those Super Long Barrels are not my thing, but this is that nice.
If you intend to show it off and have it be a conversation piece, it is worth it.
If you want a Magnum to carry and shoot, get a more used 29-2, 29-3 or a 629.

As you can tell by the responses so far a reasonably decent range of prices given - looks great by the way!
A lot of the price is still area dependent on S&W's. Whats high one place may be lower in others.
Go for it!

I would be hard pressed to walk away from that one as long as the price isn't unreasonable. Just the gorgeous stocks alone would probably be enough of a reason to ME to buy it. Good Luck

I don't know what's happening of late but you gents are whetting my appetite for longer tubes!!! That is a stunner. I prefer 4" revolvers but have been tempted by 6" revolvers, longer ones not so much. This is the second .44 I see today that's simply stunning.

I don't have an opinion on the whole shoot/not shoot thing, to each his or her own.
But if you do want to shoot magnum-ish loads out of a 29, he longer barrel is the way to go; less recoil and muzzle blast.
This one's been shot and will be again, but the light hides some of the ring on the cylinder:

That thing is a real beauty.I can't help noticing and wondering why in every photo, every different angel, that the barrel appears to ba a darker shade of blue.doesnt appear to match the frame and cylinder.anyone know why this would be that way.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback! I purchased the gun this afternoon....$1475 including shipping.
It's an 8" barrel and wil be an awesome addition to my growing collection. . The seller stated that what looks like differences in color on the barrel is shadows from the light.
I'll will post my own photos to this chat once I get it late next week.

Congratulations on your purchase, I'm confident you two will be happy together! BTW, the barrel length is nominally 8 3/8".
Also, excuse my comment but GOOD LORD THINGS THINGS GOT EXPENSIVE IN THE LAST 4 MONTHS!!!!! I've got a 6 1/2" unfired and all correct that I put around 1200 into this year....lordy, lordy.....

Medicruss,
PM one of our members Joe Cebull (jcelect on the forum). He does restorations on these presentation cases and has done one of mine for me. Super nice guy and was a pleasure to deal with. Great product and reasonably priced too!
