Default INFO FOR MODEL 25-5 Colt 45 . 6 " Barrel

I have a S&W model 25-5 45 Colt 6 inch barrel SERIAL N717 970.
A gun dealer said it my be a reproduction and not an original.
S&W made copies in the 90's. The originals are worth a lot more. Any idea what it may be worth?

Welcome! Your dealer may have been referring to later variations of the model 25 in .45 Colt made by S & W that could technically be termed "reproductions", but rest assured that yours is a true factory gun that dates to the early 1980s. If he was trying to lowball an offer to buy or trade for the gun, that is another story...

Its value is dependent on condition and whether it has all the stock parts (including box and contents), so a detailed description of any wear or photos would help here.

Welcome to the forum.

The only thing a 25-5 could be a reproduction of would be one of the 25-5s that rolled off the line ahead of it. I suspect the dealer wanted to buy your .45 for a low price. The serial number dates your 25-5 to 1980. Model 25 .45 Colt dash numbers advanced to 6 during 1988 so there were no 25-5s made in the 1990s. In the eyes of collectors and S&W enthusiasts the recently manufactured Classic line of revolvers are not considered reproductions. They just look too modern. What the dealer suggested made no sense.

Even if it was a Model 25 .45 Colt from the 1990s it’s debatable whether it would be worth more or less. Target shooters usually pay more for .45 Colts made after S&W reduced the chamber throat diameters but many collectors insist on having the earlier revolvers like yours with pinned barrels.

A 25-5 in 45 Colt is a 25-5. Before that in 45 Colt there was the 25-3. It had a shorter cylinder and more barrel thru the frame. I wouldn't call it a reproduction any more than a I would a 25-9. Just a later model. Other than the 25-3 I don't know what it would be a reproduction of. I think all the pre models in 45 where ACP. The 1950 and 1955. A very few 1917 came with adjustable sights but, had a slightly different frame in that it is round at the barrel junction and had a round thin barrel and was of course a 45 ACP.

Calling your 25-5 a reproduction is like calling a model model 15 a reproduction of an early 38 M&P

Tell your dealer that you'll believe it is a reproduction if he shows you where the "Made in China" is stamped on your revolver!

Dealers are notorious for finding non-existent flaws in a revolver when they are buying, but this guy takes the prize for creativity!
