Default Medallion (Gold/Silver) Question

Fellow Fans of the Hand Ejector, please enlighten me:

I understand it to be that A Blued S&W HE from the Pinned and Recessed era with Factory stocks would have Gold Medallions.

I also understand that a Nickel, or Early Stainless Revolver (Like a 66 or my 629 No Dash) with Factory Stocks would have Silver Medallions.

Is that truly the case, or at least what you have found to be true?

I ask because my 27-2 has nice Target stocks with Gold Medallions, it is a Nickel Gun.

I am going to get some more Kuracs, so if they are not the original stocks, I'll get a set for the 27, and put the Stocks with the Gold Medallions on my Highway Patrolman.

Your guidance is appreciated as I am still learning one day at a time.

My guess is the gold medallion stocks started out as silver plated (nickel plated ??) brass, and the plating worn off or removed intentionally.

Gold medallion stocks went out in the mid 20's me thinks.

Gold medallions only existed from 1910-1920, all others were either Nickel or Chromed depending on period. Post WWII medallions can be Steel, Brass or plastic as the base, these were all Nickel plated. If you see any post 1920 stocks that appear to be gold they are either brass that the plating has peeled off of, or they have been varnished over. This is very common when stocks have been re-finished since the medallions cannot be removed. Varnish such as "Tru-Oil" are distinctly yellow.

Gold-colored (non-plated brass) late-style factory medallions do exist but they're fairly scarce. I have factory original stocks with them and loose medallions.

Bill Cross notes that gold-colored medallion stocks were sometimes put on factory special guns here: Silver or gold S&W medallions?
