Value of a 29-2 6.5" barrel
Below is the description. Assume gun is 98-99%
I also want to make sure of one thing: When measuring the barrel length, its not where the barrel meets the frame. It where the barrel starts (inside the frame, basically where the end of the cylinder is). I can't get the pic to post. Grips are a rubber hogue looking grip.
Aprox value of the gun?
S&W 29-2 44 magnum..Dirty Harry..3 screw...blue finish..double action..6.5 inch barrel..adjustable rear target sight...target front sight...target trigger..only about 80 rounds fired..leather bianchi holster..nylon shoulder holster, original wooden box..50 rounds of hp(not pictured) truly a beautiful gun.

The grips are not correct. Assuming the condition is 98-99% with pres. case, IMHO the value is $650 to $750 - assuming an "N" prefix serial number. You will likely pay $50 to $75 for the correct grips. The holsters and ammo would add $50 to $100.

Thanks
It is an "N" prefix serial. I didn't think the grips were correct for that gun. I thought on the earlier guns they would have been wood and if they ever went to rubber it was a bit later in production.
Does Smith number their wooden grips to the guns on the inside?

The wood grips will not be numbered so are easily replacable with something of correct vintage and condition.
How much does the seller want for it?

Revolver barrel lengths are from cylinder face to muzzle. 29-2s were made in 6 and 6.5"; there are more 6.5" but since they were made famous by a certain movie the 6" are worth less. The service or Magna stocks were numbered to the gun until the early 1980s but the Target stocks (with a few exceptions in the 1950s) were usually not. Agree with Bob on the value estimates.

For all intents and purposes I agree with Murphydog and Rad29. For another piece of semi-objective information a quick search (super quick - so verify for yourself) of Gun Broker reveals 135 ended listings over the past 3 months for model 29-2's with 6" barrel. A quick scan looks like the majority were blue finish. Some have re-listed a number of times and have not sold. Completed, i.e. sold prices have ranged between $695 (about 90% condition with box and tools) to $3223 for an immaculate S-prefix with "Coke" grips and nice box. Only one went for more than $3223 - the highest selling price was $3225 for a LNIB S-prefix. It did not have "Coke" grips. It looks like a total of 28 sales or completed auctions the past 3 months. The following statement is just a very quick estimate and is not verified by me but is probably not far off: It looks like the median price for an original 29-2 N-prefix in excellent all-original condition might be roughly $1000 on Gun Broker.

His asking price is $1000obo (and its not original stocks)... Stocks are not a big deal with regards to originality since it sounds like many were not numbered.
Perhaps I will make him an offer of around $600-$650 although that would be a big stretch from $1k. I am not that interested in the holsters or even the HP. I doubt I will fire it much, if at all. Not a big fan of 44mag since I don't hunt. I sold both my Anacondas about 4 weeks ago. Just kept the safe queen 1st edition Anaconda. I hate to admit this, but I am looking for something to sit in my safe and appreciate slowly for a few years so a nice pre-lock Smith might do the trick and if I can get it for $650 I don't see a way to lose on the deal.
Thanks everybody for your help.
Scott

Good plan, but few of us would sell that gun for that price, I think. I would rather keep the gun that have $650 cash.

$1000 is not out of line for that gun. Plan on $100 - $150 for nice set of target grips.

You are probably correct but I have little to lose and it isn't a big deal to me if I get it. I won't mind getting it, but if not I won't lose any sleep either.
Its a local guy trying to sell it on a local forum. Originally he thought he had a 4 screw version and wanted double that amount until I educated him and then he dropped the price a lot. If he had the correct grips and/or the box I would go higher obviously. Based on what is being said here that leaves me a little room to come up in price, but I don't really want to go over $700 as I still will have to find a set of nice wood stocks. He has had it for sale for at least a week now so he might be willing to deal... nothing ventured, nothing gained.
thanks

Leave it for somebody that really wants it and will truly appreciate it for what it is.

I understand what you are saying but he must want to sell the gun, I am not trying to talk him into it.

Here's a Nobel idea. Offer him what you would take if you were selling the gun.

Everybody, thanks for your help. I should know in a few days. He is looking for the wood grips. He must think he has them somewhere.
