Since I make my own leather stuff, I can't recommend a brand but there are a few things I think a field holster should have.
I recently made these 2 field holsters for a forum member.
One's for a 6" 686 and the other's for a 5" 1911.
They have closed bottoms, a hold down strap and a nice wide stable belt loop. They're made of 8 to 9 ounce leather and are designed to ride at a comfortable level. If it's not for concealed carry, there's no reason for the gun butt to be pokin' you in the side.
My personal belt's a double layer, hand stitched leather belt. It's not reinforced but so far it hasn't needed it.
