I think it would hurt my eyes to see a scope on a beautiful old M17......

Putting a scope on a tool.
I scoped my first Model 17 early in the 80's and it really help make me a better shot. It made me realize how much I was moving around the target. In those days the T/C Contender scope was available, my revolver needed to be drilled&tap'd but the iron sights will hide the holes on the top of the action if you want to go back. A 2 power scope works better with me, more field of view while using everything the 22lr has to offer. Now I use a scoped Model 41 and my old Contender for good 40 yard squirrel stew maker.

There are scope mounts for non-drilled revolvers available. I will caution that they are held in place with a screw into the rear sight "slot", which is pretty secure, and the front mounting screw which is very small. I have seen several of these front screws "sheared off" and had to be drilled out and re-tapped. I have not seen one mounted on a .22 RF having problems, but I have on 38 target guns using only 148 gr WC target loads. The heavier the scope, the higher the odds are it may come loose. Have you considered one of the small red dot sights?, they weigh less than most scopes, and are very easy to use by less experienced shooters. Midway and Brownells have both had these mounts in the past.

Blasphemy!
Get a gun that's already ugly to put a scope on.

My 17-4 8 3/8" was bought new, is 100% original and is made of unobtainium. You would have a better chance of finding a snowball in hell, than a classic Smith that I risked permanently altering.

Both Weaver and B-Square make (or at least used to) no drilling mounts that utilize the rear sight factory drilled hole, and a clamp type arrangement that attaches to the barrel near the front of the frame. I used a similar mount for a Ruger Super Blackhawk years ago, and it held up fine. I am sure it would at .22 lr recoil levels.
On a .22, either a red dot sight, or a 2x scope would work well. Leuplold's are nice, and if money is a concern, you can get away with cheaper glass, as recoil is not an issue.
Its your gun, so don't be concerned what other think, do what works for you.

This is true.
But I'm still shuddering and will definitely have bad dreams tonight. Sorry.

If you want to try one, I have a B-Square Universal K,L,N mount that you can use with regular Weaver rings. PM me your address, and I'll mail it to you. If you like it, send me $15 and whatever the shipping was. If you don't, mail it back and reimburse me the shipping.

Took this photo early Friday morning and it was overcast with rain. All three are blue like the night sky.
Just got that '71 Colt last winter. It was hardly used until I bought it. I load some soft shooting 158 leads for fun and stout 158 JSPs for my pocket.
Gonna make some white wooden grips for the DS ASAP.
Poor man's ivory.
The Smith will get a scope and the Diamondback was bought in '80 as a birthday gift for ElleMae which she gave to her 10 year old son. Sat unfired for 17 years.
The Smith might have had about 20K so far.

Yes, it is the one that just fits where the factory sight is removed, using the "T" slot in the back, and the mounting screw up front.
This is a picture of it mounted on my 17-4.

What we need is a mount that also takes Ruger rings. Whatever scope we get will also be used on another Ruger that is made for their rings. I just want to use a scope on the Smith to see how accurate it really is at 50/100 yards.
I might try to make one when I have access to a mill this winter.
If anything changes and you still have that mount I will get back to you.
Thanks again.

This has been on the "to do list" for some time.
I hope the pictures explain what I was planning for a scope base.
