?s on a nickel 19 combat magnum
I got a chance to pick up a nice 19 combat magnum but the guy that owns it isnt sure if everything is right on it. I dont know what dash it is. It has box but a friend of mine said it didnt look right and the front sight didnt either. It also has stag grips would this hurt the value or help it? What do you guys think its worth? Is there anything else yall can spot? These are the only pics i have right now.

Buy the gun. It and the box are correct. It should be wearing diamond targets but the stags are nice. It looks like a 19-2.

Anything less than $600 for that gun with the stags would be a steal unless pics don't show something bad.

Short answer: It looks pretty good.
What are they asking?
Long answer: That looks like a model 19-2 or -3. An earlier model 19 would have the fourth screw in front of the trigger guard. The front site looks original to me. You can determine which engineering change (i.e. dash following the 19) by looking at the frame opposite the yoke (arm that swings out when cylinder is released) where it should be stamped. In order to determine if it is the original nickel finish there should be a N stamped on the rear of the cylinder and a N stamped on the left side of the butt frame under the grips. Ask the seller to look for refinish marks - possibly a star or diamond on the back of the cylinder and/or a RN or R-N or R-Ni (possibly inside a rectangle) stamped on the left butt frame under the grip. The trigger looks very dark which is probably just the normal case hardening but I wonder if it is blued (?). Better pictures and the serial number including where the K is in the serial number (sometimes a number or two in front of the K) would help us give you a better idea. The box is interesting. Usually a nickel gun of that vintage is in a silver box. The metal reinforcements on the box corner are silver and I don't recall seeing that before. They're usually blue. Nonetheless the patina of the box looks appropriate for its age. The box makes me wonder if the gun may have originally been a blue gun sent back to S&W for refinishing?

Agree with the above. It would help to know the serial number from the bottom of the grip frame (it would be K 260xxx or higher), the model number stamped on the frame under the barrel with the cylinder out, and the asking price (if you care to reveal that).

If you don't trade for that right now, someone needs to check your blood for crack or something similar. :-) Even with a dodgy picture that looks near to perfect. I don't even see any small scratches off the flash.

Good find! That's a super sharp looking 19. I love those proud pins on the front sight. I didn't know that was still happening mid 60s.

K618xxx would have shipped in 1965 as a -2.
