Default S&W Model 53

I have a .22 Magnum revolver model 53. It fires .22 Jet ammunition, which is a necked down .357 shell casing with a .22 bullet. I also have a set of inserts that drop into the .22 Jet cylinder in order to fire .22LR cartridges. I have seen these for sale with the .22 Mag cylinder & a .22 LR cylinder. Does anyone know where or how I can get a .22 LR cylinder and have it fitted to my gun? It was my understanding that at one time long ago the gun could be sent to Smith & Wesson to have this done but don't know if they do this any longer. I sent them an email about it but never got a response. Any information or advice would be appreciated.

By the way, I am new to this forum and this is my first post.

If you can find a LR or mag cylinder, a decent gunsmith can fit it to your Model 53. Finding one is the hard part. Call Smith & Wesson. It can't hurt to ask if they offer this service or can suggest where to get one. Maybe someone else on the forum has an extra or knows where you can get one. A good machine shop could make one but it would probably be cost prohibitive. Welcome to the forum.

I don't know if its good information or not. As I understand it, the Jet uses the same frame window and cylinder length as a M19. The Jets with the 22 call cylinder uses a longer cylinder than a Model 17. Its what makes the conversion so difficult. About the only or the best way is to accept that this isn't like going to walmart looking for a pillow. If you want to do this, understand its a long, hard journey. Start posting in the wanted ads. Don't expect any quick results, so be patient.

I went through this many years ago for my jet. The .22 cylinder for the jet is indeed longer than the standard M17 cylinder so the chances of finding one are pretty slim, and if you do the cost is pretty prohibitive. My solution was to just by a M17 and keep the jet for jet ammo. Back when I did this the cost wasn't much different!

You should check + Bowen Classic Arms + Home. They advertise cylinders for the Model 53.
