SW 28-2 S prefix value
I have a 28-2 4 inch bbl. 357 mag caliber. S/N S274xxx. I bought this gun off this board from a member here. I like it a lot and I do not want to sell but I Would like to know the approx value.
This piece has been sent back to smith before I bought it for a full overhaul. It has also been refinished in a royal blue. The gun is absolutely mint. I have hogue grips on it for shooting but I am going to put a air of altamont grips on it.
So give me your best estimate from my description.
Thanks

You didn't say who did the refinish so assume it wasn't S&W. I paid $400 for a refinished one (also S sn) in 2012. Sold it for $450 this year. I'd guess as described yours would be worth about the same; maybe a little more if S&W did the refinish. Good shooter, but no collector value. Good luck.

If you bought it here, I'm guessing you paid what it is worth. You did not say what that was, what was it?

I am not upset for what I paid. I am very happy with the price I paid and the quality of the gun. The seller was great too. I don't remember who it was.
It was refinished and gone over by Smith and Wesson. I paid around 600-650. I would have to look it up. I was just curious of the value with a S prefix. I was cleaning it today and noticed the S. I always thought it was a N.
I ought it over a year ago. Maybe 2 years ago.
Like I said I do not want to sell. The gun is just to perfect to part with. It is like a 4 inch model 27-2 without top checkering.

How about some pics? Price/value is going to be subjective. What's it worth to you, and what is someone else willing to spend to get it.
I have an "S" prefix 272XXX 4" 28-2, with diamond magnas myself. Great guns! I paid $400 a couple years ago, and have seen similar guns and even guns in lesser condition go for considerably more than that. The 28's have seen a resurgence in interest in that model, and prices have been climbing for a couple years. $400 guns have been found, but are a rarity, some have gone for over $1300 on the auction sites, and one sold here for $1000 in the classifieds. In the current market, something between $500 and $600 wouldn't be unreasonable for a shooter. Where your gun has been refinished and lacks the original grips and accessories, the value as a collector piece will be diminished. If you're going to hang on to it, then its' value is what you place it at.
Congrats again and good shooting.

I would say you paid a reasonable price, especially considering the work was done by S&W. The four inch version is sought after now. I don't think you would have trouble selling it for close to what you paid if you ever decide to let it go.
Obviously, some people would not want it at all since it has been refinished. To others, that would not matter much.

Just saw your post about what you paid. You're within the realm of reality there. You did well.

Thanks. I appreciate all the replies. It is very hard for me to post pics with the iPad. The finish is just like my 27-2. The top strap where the checkering is on a 27 has the matte finish of the 28. I think smith did a great job. It is really beautiful. I really want better grips.

Altamont grips are nice, Kuracs are really nice, but a set of Grashorn 3/4 bark Stags would be awesome.

S prefix increases collector value a bit, and refinish reduces value to a collector, so it's a wash.
Just enjoy it.

Very nice! I keep thinking about putting a set on my 28, but just haven't quite got there yet. Imagine how this would look with a nice set of Stags.

My 28 no dash from 1960 is wearing Herrett target grips. They are a good size for me. I have original diamond targets for it also. It is S2011xx. Bob
