34-1 Snub ~ Round vs Square
I have a trade pending for a nice condition w/box (no tools or papers) but had a question.
The one I'm looking at is a square butt snub. I see mostly round butt snubs. Is this less/more desirable being a square butt?
Thanks!

In general it seems that short barreled revolvers tend to have round butts most of the time. This is not a hard and fast rule, but is generally likely. If you need a little more to hold onto than the found butt J-frame provides, you might look at the target grips from Model 34s that completely enclose the grip frame, but are only a little bigger than the square butt magna type.

I think the older j frames were mostly square butt, at least from what I have seen.
I have two square butts that I carry a lot. A model 36, and a model 37 which I have in a Galco paddle holster on my hip right now.
My model 60 and 637 are round butts, but they are newer revolvers.

Don't know about collector value or desire, but with a J frame, I prefer the square butt because the round butts feel too small to me when shooting.

Hey MiGS, a Model 34 2-inch is very desirable no matter if it's a round or square butt. If you can get it for a good price, do it!

Probably $500-600 depending on condition.

You aren't going to use it for self-defense are you? Rimfire is better than no gun but that's it. The reason the front sight is so high is because these guns shoot way high. With the 40 gr "target" Federals in the 325 white box six o'clock is the lower edge of the target. The 36 gr "Wallybox" are better, 4gr is a 10% weight difference and shoot more to point of aim. I have a 17, 18, and a 63 but this one always goes to the range. Joe

Here's some J-Frame targets on a 34-1, and some banana grips on a pair of nice 38's for comparison.

I like the banana grips. I put a set on a 638 that I obtained with 2 sets of rubber, including one that was banana shaped and had finger grooves. I like the wood.

I have big hands and prefer the SB, but my two Js are RB so I've learned to shoot them as is. My M10 snub is a SB and fits me perfectly w/a grip adapter.

No! Not for defense, just increasing the collection.
Should have it this afternoon. Will post pics and trade details later so not to jinx it...

It's mine now! Just got home from making the trade.
In correct numbered box, but the box has no papers or tools. Not too upset about that.
Easier to find tools and papers than the numbered box.
Here's the kicker.. All he wanted for it was a "great" condition 9mm Shield.
So I bought him a brand new one. For $299+tax.
I will say that for the 7 hours I owned a Shield I was not impressed, much happier with this 34-1.

Yes. The Kit Guns are nice. I now have two. Both have the round butt. One is a 2" I frame Kit Gun from before model numbers appeared. The other is a 4" J frame 34-1 with nickel finish. I like them both! Maybe someday I'll stumble across a square butt 4" Kit Gun. I might not be able to keep myself from buying it, if the price is right!

Not a snubby, but I sure do like it.
It's the only one I've ever seen so I did not know there was any other grip frame style.
Guess I'm lookin', now . . ..

This^ Does not apply.
There's no guarantee with trades!
If the other party balked or upon inspection I determined the 34 was a re-blue, I would still be in possession of MY Shield.
As it happens the trade was agreeable and the process was completed in compliance using Massachusetts eFA-10.

I'm glad you know what you're doing; but I'm surprised that that reasoning passes ATF.
If someone asks me to buy them a firearm and says they will meet me and pay me when I present it to them, well ----- I couldn't be sure He/She would follow thru and meet me with the $$$.
Really, there are no guarantees in ANY business transaction.
