Default Model 15 ...can you date it??

Hi folks. Picked up a sweet Model 15-4. Number is 22K8XXX.
One buggered screw and non matching number on the grips, but other than that we can't find anything else not to like about it. Wondering if the serial number alone is enough to date it. Barrell is pinned.
Slicked it up a little and put the spring kit in it last night, and we'll straighten out and blue the screw head this evening.
It's a beauty.
Thanks in advance;
Bill

SCSW shows 10KXXXX to 24KXXXX being 1977.

1978, despite what the Standard Catalog says. All the 22K guns were made in 1978. It could, of course, have shipped later.

The SCSW is a great S&W resource but while the serial ranges are kinda close they are not absolute...

The general belief is that S&W revolvers were produced at the factory then went into a storage vault to await shipment,
As certain models were needed they were pulled from the vault and shipped from what was handy to get to not by serial number.

For an exact shipping date you can send for a factory letter which IIRC costs around $50.
