Police Department-City of New York
19-1 acquired a few years back, when I was inspecting my new acquisition and inventorying the contents of the box it had a checklist for pistol license holders to adhere to., so file this maybe letter the gun. Years later and now lettered I find it was shipped to Charles Greenblatt&Co New York, NY on 5th of November 1962.

I didn't think NYPD used 19 or anything 357.
Beautiful gun though

I believe NYPD just issued the license, not that the revolver belonged to NYPD.

Wasn't over penetration worries in big cities a hot issue with the 357 mag at the time??

The NYPD has never issued anything other than .38s and 9mm barring special circumstances.

Exactly.
And as far as NYPD carrying revolvers,I've only seen Model 10s.
Four decades ago,it may have been easier to get a PL in NYC,but currently,it is no easy task-I understand that it's at least a year wait to get one,if they want to issue you one..As a resident of NY state myself with a NY state PL, NYC might as well be a different country when it comes to my pistol ownership.

Sounds like a good reason to move to me. Here in NC I was in and out in about 30 minutes for mine and that was on a busy day. If you already have a CCW you don't have to do anything but pay LGS.

I'm thinking of another state for reasons other than gun ownership, but it's looking like that state,Washington, is going the way of my own.

It would be very interesting to have known to whom this model 19-1 was sold...the printed instructions imply the owner had an NYC carry license in the early 1960s, which to my understanding would have been next to impossible to obtain except by the very wealthy, politically connected or famous (or all three).

Bingo
That was my thoughts exactly. Charles Greeblatt&Co from my limited resurch would have been a goto place for an individual such as you describe.

I don't think that the instructions indicate a carry permit.
Very brief, compared to the booklet with which I must comply,as merely a holder of a NY sportsman license.

I suppose the instructions could have been simply from a purchase, and those were from the '60s...but I think the ability to even buy a handgun in NYC at that time was extraordinarily limited.

You are correct. That revolver (a beauty) was for "civilian" use. The NYPD, over the years, authorized a number of revolvers from various makers; S&W, Colt, Ruger, Dan Wesson. Never authorized other than a .38 Special caliber revolver and always with fixed sites.

WY...check it out. It's a Free State. We are 90 miles south and won't be someday if I live long enough. WY...it's the place to be...

Unfortunately,I need to be near a coast and salt water. That limits my choices quite a bit (and I don't think that I'm a full time Florida type),and I reckon that half of those are problematic.

NYPD Officers also carried Rugers, Dan Wessons and Colts in the revolver-only days.

S&W Revolvers
NYPD Authorized the S&W Model 10, the Colt OP and I believe the Ruger Security Six for duty carry. NYPD never issued .357s for carry nor were they authorized for duty use but officers were allowed to own pretty much anything they wanted.

Charles Greenblatt is a well-know figure among NYPD as he is one of the few NYPD badge-makers.
Would this gun be presented to him by the Dept or could it be a special purchase from him?? Just a guess...

Purchased from him, I suspect. It was probably less annoying in the 60s to get a permit, just took a different path. Almost certainly a private purchase, maybe by a cop, although it was obviously not something allowed to be seriously carried, and it does not look as though it was. IIRC, a friend who did 20 on NYPD had an M19 in those days but it was not to carry.
