I stopped into my favorite honey hole and saw a Model 67 P&R 357 magnum 4"

Curious for information about this apparent error in markings.

Rare..? Valuable..?

Stainless sights and all original..

Stamped as .357? Back in the day 2 guys I know had stainless .38's reamed by a gunsmith to shoot .357's in them. As I recall he gave them warning it wasn't meant for a steady diet of hot .357's.

Sure it wasn't a model 66? 66 was in .357 and the 67 was .38 special. Wish I had a model 66. What were they asking for the one you saw...if you don't mind me askin.

I'd be interested in what barrel was mounted to it. Is it a Tapered barrel with just a small locking lug or is it a Heavy Straight profile with a shroud that enclosed the ejector rod? If it's the latter what you have is most likely a mis marked model 66 and not that rare. Because S&W has had a continuing history of mis stamping various model revolvers and it has happened frequently enough to not cause any increase in value.

Probably not factory issue. A pistolsmith has just swapped in a 357 cylinder and barrel from the identical M 66. I have done so several times. The reason could be the previous owner just wanted to have the two caliber capability. Or, there was a problem barrel with accuracy or being bulged, or the cylinder developed some anomaly. If you have to change one of the cylinder or the barrel it isn't much more effort to change both. ..............

It's a mis marked 66.. heavy shrouded barrel. No box which could've made it interesting.

I told him to put it on GB with no reserve and see what happens. He will.

... Or it could have been a 64-1 heavy barrel 357, which was the precursor to the Model 65. Sometimes S&W's "4"'s look an awful lot like "7"'s...

Has anyone tried to chamber 357 in the cylinder. it may have just been rebarreled 67
