Value of Model 547 Stainless..Added question on markings
I have run across a Model 547 3", RB pinned barrel in stainless or hard chrome. Not sure which.I know it is a refinish since the M547 was in blue only but refinish is extremely good and gun is in great shape. Seller wants $950 for it, which seems high since it is not factory. No box or docs, gun only. I didn't look to see if there were any Smith refinish marks on gun but can check tomorrow.Opinions would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
03/15/15- Attached pics of frame and was wondering if all of these markings are inspector marks or refinish marks.. Thanks in advance !

It is not stainless, most likely it is industrial hard chrome
I do not think I would pay that kind of money for a 547 with an aftermarket finish.
However, I already have a 547. My view might be different if I did not own one and really, really wanted one.

Maybe it's to lighting or the quality of the photo but that does not look like a typical nickel (re)finish. It could be a satin nickel or a hard chrome finish. I doubt you will find any S&W refinish marks on it. Regardless it would be a refinish and my two cents worth is that $950 seems high for a non-original finish. How much too high is the question?

Not up on the markings, but the front sight looks odd, too. Might just be the photo. I am not as bothered by the hard chrome as others would be, as I am not that kind of collector. For a serious working gun, there is much to be said for that finish, and the 3" RB/HB is a winning format in the K frame.

I think all 547 are high priced, but I am not a hard core collector. The finish would be ideal for carry.

Those are not any of S&W’s old refinish stamps and S&W has never plated triggers and hammers along with the rest of a revolver. The harder question is what type of finish it has. It could just be the lighting but it looks too shiny to be a Armloy type satin hard chrome. Is it nickle?
As a wild *** rule of thumb, as a collector’s item a S&W revolver that is so well refinished that it is difficult to spot the refinish is worth half of what it would be if the finish was original or worth its utility value, which ever is greater. It is up to the buyer to know how much utility value it has to them. A S&W revolver that was refinished with a finish the factory never used has to be priced as a custom gun. The value of custom guns is in the eye of the beholder.

Both revolvers in the photo below are 547s. The top one was re-finished and the butt was rounded whilst the bottom one is original.
The $950 asking price is on the high side for a re-finished 547 IMO.

I believe it is hard nickel but nor sure. Has a matte finish. Thank all of you so much for your assistance. I appreciate it!

For a refinished 547 I would pay 500 as a shooter. No more. The gun has no collector value being refinished. Only value is as a shooter.

Heck for 950 I would be patient and spend a few hundred more and find a original lnib or nib model for that price point.

I agree the stampings all look factory (not indicative of a refinish); the factory would not have stamped a refinished gun of this era or used a hard chrome finish in any case.
Depending on how the right side of the frame (the dreaded sideplate seam) appears I would be tempted to call this more than a $475 gun, but certainly not $950. Depends on your bargaining skills and the owner willing to negotiate.

It has kind of a "soft" gold tone to it. To me, that indicates Electroless nickel. And, based on the era when those came out, makes sense to me. E nickel is a good finish, I had several guns done that way. But, it has exactly 0% original finish left as a collectors gun. I'm thinking $500 or so for a good using gun.
It's likely what I would have done to one of those had I bought one when they came out.
To my eyes, nickel looks white. E nickel has a golden hue and hard chrome has a blueish tint. Everyone's eyeballs are calibrated differently, but, that's what I see.

If the refinish is done well i would have no problem being in the 600-800 range.
Not a collectors gun but lets face it the market is taking a huge jump on these and people are starting to ask 1200+ on shooter grade guns and some are getting it.
A buddy graciously sold me one at pre inflated prices and i am very happy to own and enjoy it. It will be one of the last guns i ever hope to part with.
They are a lot of fun to shoot and ammo is still affordable. I like that it makes my 9mm ammo more versatile as i shoot 9 in a few semi's.
