Model 25 in 45 acp
Probably a silly question, but I am curious if Smith and Wesson made a model 25 in 45 acp in 4" length. I have one in 6.5" and it is a very nice one, but I really like the 4" N frames. I have been looking at gunbroker lately and have seen 6", 6.5" and I think 8 3/8" but no 4" for sale. Don't really have the money now anyway, but thinking ahead.

I do not think so. It would be a heck of a great platform.

I think they made some 4" round butt ones for the FBI.
They are not common I believe some were made special order.
Mine doesn't qualify as it's 3 1/2

The 25 in .45 acp was never made by S&W in 4" length. I wanted a 4"
gun so when I bought one many years ago in 6 1/2" length I had it
cut to 4".

It may not be your thing, but when you get ready, you can't beat a 625JM. Mine goes to the range more than any other gun I own! Bob

I believe the Model 1950 was available with the 4" barrel. I wanted one years ago and could not find one I could afford.
More currently, there was a run of the Model 22-4 which had 4" barrels, 45 ACP but with fixed sights.

I wonder if you could put the barrel from one of the .45 Colts on a 25-2?

+1
As mentioned, you can look for a 4" Model of 1950 (pre M26) or M22 but my method of a 4" M25-2 (Model of 1955) was to start with the M25-5 (.45 Colt) and have the cylinder milled for moon clips.
Of course barrel swapping or cutting is an option as well as an M625.

Well, that answers my question! I guess I will stop looking! Now, do I cut up my beautiful 6 1/2", mill a 45 colt, go to a 625 or just forget it? I have been thinking about getting a revolver for competition. With the new rules the JM 625 is not really competitive, but neither am I, so?

My last choice would be cut a beautiful 6.5".
I'd find a 25-5 or 625. And prolly leaning toward a 625.

I almost thought my model 25 classic was a convertible
it came with a moon clip tried a 45acp casing but it didn't work
I contacted S&W they said disregard it ,it was placed there by mistake
oh well.

Do the new 625 pistols come drilled and tapped from the factory ? I'm thinking of getting a 45acp revolver. I saw a beautiful 25-2 pistol at a show yesterday and the guy was asking 1300$ for it. Was in great shape. Never saw one before so i don't know much about their value.

Probably your best option is to obtain a 1989 model 625.

Yes, they did make a few. There has been a pic posted on this forum by one of the high end collectors. There was also a pic in an old Guns&Ammo magazine from the 80's of one. I would guess that if a factory 4" 25-2 was for sale it would be in the high 4 figures. You cannot use a 25-5 barrel since the shank of the barrel that sticks out from the rear of the frame in front of the cylinder is shorter on a 25-5 and there would be a very large gap.
I have seen several that were cut down from a 6", but to do it so it looks factory would probably be around 400. I think Bowen does it and it looks like it left the factory that way.
I agree, that I would like to have one. I had a 625-2 in 4", but I LIKE blued, square butt N frames. I got used to the lugged barrel, but would have preferred a standard barrel.

This is an old story but years ago I wanted a S&W 45 ACP revolver with a 4" barrel. The Model 1950 was out of my price range and there were no 25-2's with that length. What I did was to convert a 28-2 to handle the 45 ACP cartridge. I sent the barrel out for boring and rifling and when it returned, I fit the M25-2 cylinder to the frame. I also replaced the frame lug with one for a M25-2. I rounded the grip frame and the end result was perfect for my needs. About a decade later the Mountain Revolver series came available but I was very happy with my old conversion.
Now, the Model 22-4 is available and an even better choice for what I wanted but 30 years to late!

Your conversion sounds like a real gem to me. I recently bought a converted 1917 that had a 2 1/2 inch barrel. Shoots great.

I really wanted a 4" S&W 45acp revolver. I did something similar to StrawHat. Had a Model 25 6 1/2" which I rarely shot. Picked up a Model 28 barrel to be bored out, sent them to Andy Horvath.
I had Andy marked the barrel Model of 1950 in the same script as on my 6 1/2" Model of 1950. Left the 25-2 on the frame. Bobbed the hammer a bit, smooth trigger, chamfered chambers, nice action job and his bluing. Andy does very good work.
