Red face 59 photos of a model 25

And I guess more than a few persons felt that this was a perfect package.

MINT model 25-5. Well at least they didn't call it MINTY.

MINT 1980 S&W 25-5 BLUE 45 COLT 4" P&R TTT'S BOX : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Do you think the end label and box are original to this gun ?
The box is from a presentation cased gun.
These typically did not come with end labels.

The grips are not. They are replacements.
Guaranteed that N678*** has large chamber throats.
Don't forget, this is the RARE pinned and RECESSED model 25-5.
Recessed is mentioned 4 times in the description.

Caveat Emptor<> Buyer beware.

$2355.00 Dollars. Holy Cats.

Good Luck

Don't forget that it also has a fixed Patridge front sight.

I'm right with you on that one. "P&R" verbiage gets thrown around way too much and most sellers don't appear to know what that means. I don't think that box would have an end label either, as you stated it appears there should be a presentation case. Now maybe this gun did come in a presentation case and had the special ordered smooth target grips??? I have only seen smooth presentation target grips on special order guns or those that come with a presentation case.

Allen, can you please educate me on what guns or shipments would likely have smooth target grips? I say likely because we all know that words like "should" and "always" and "never" don't always apply with Smiths.

Other than curiosity about the grips, I'd say your spot on with your assessment. Thanks.

I believe the box did not have a label on the end and it was added before being offered at auction. I base this on the fact the front sight box is not filled in, but should be filled in RR for red ramp and the other sight box should be checked indicating a white outline rear sight. The finish box should be filled in BT for bright blue. If the stocks were original, smooth stocks would probably be written in the special features section of the label. The presentation case is missing, but was part of the original package.

Individuals who participate in these auctions should do their homework before committing a significant amount of money.

Bill

I see a pin but where's the recesses? Some people have lots of money and lots of free time. Nice gun but $2300 nice?

That package is full of fail. My bogus meter is off the scale.

The only Smith that I ever saw that came standard with the smooth target grips was the 544. I would imagine other "special" Smiths might have, but not a plain Jane 25-5. Not sure what the status of Special Order items was in 1980 - was S&W still doing that?

Definitely would have the large throats - that gun is <2K numbers earlier than a 4" 25-5 I had the misfortune of buying - a 250 gr LSWC makes an impressive hole in the target when it passes through it sideways.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I guess the thing that chaps me is that an honest complete Package could be listed Tomorrow in the same condition but just not by a "top 100" Seller and it would struggle to sell for $1,500.I am buying the Gun,Not the Sellers reputation.

I would like to know how sellers keep top notch reputations while selling pieced together sets like this one.

This seller gets top dollar for every gun they put out there, no doubt about that.

They always have a ton of real nice pictures with the gun, and almost always have all of the accoutrements with it as well.

Taking the mentioned problems with the case and the stocks aside, that gun certainly looks the part. It is beautiful, no doubt about. It is a 4" n a Frame with Smooth targets. I have two 629s and a model 28 set up like that too. So this gun appeals to me, but not for what it went for. No way.

Allen, question for you, as you are a sharp guy, and an expert on these Smiths.

Why do you think it has a good Chance to have an issue with the throats, and why does this seem to be an issue mainly with the model 25?

Thanks!

The stocks are gorgeous, but the right hand one appears to be chipped at the top.

As I stated in my post, my 25-5 was built less than 2K units after this one. I was told that Smith used pre-war dimensions for the cylinder throats and post war for the barrel. The throats on my gun measured .456 to .458. Any 25-5 with a pinned barrel should be measured.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I cant decide if the Madonna photo is a subliminal request for forgiveness for the seller or a prayer for the buyer who appears to have purchased "the story" along with the gun.

The only revolvers that had recessed cylinders in that era, were the magnum calibers (.357, .41, 44), and the .22 calibers.
