newish member who went to big box looking for new s&w 67. ended up with a 64-3 4" bull barrel ssn ABR73XX looks in good condition, although I'm a complete novice. original wood grips, no box. paid $405 help appreciated with gun's birthday. also curious about what CTG means on barrel will attempt to photograph and submit in future. thanks,

I'm going to say your gun was manufactured between January and October of 1983.

I'm assuming your gun does NOT have a pinned barrel? CTG stands for cartridge in Smith & Wesson terminology.

Now THAT is a really nice gun! In my experience, the magna grips for fixed sight guns like yours are rounded along the bottom edge. Yours have the flat edge customarily found on the 67. I could be wrong; never say never with S&W. Perhaps the serial # is stamped inside the grip. So you DID come home with at least part of a 67.

You are correct that my gun has the wrong grips, they should be PC. I'm in the process of refinishing a set for it, but my wife bought me a set of Grashorn stags for Christmas so the PC's have been put aside for now.

thanks for the replies. what had interested me in the 67 was the adjustable sights and the rubber grip. since i ended up with the 64-3 without either, should i consider a crimson laser grip?

There is nothing at all wrong or bad with the fixed sights (unless the point of impact is seriously removed from point of aim). Personally, for a carry gun, I like fixed better than adjustables. For target use, the adjustables are OK. I carried adjustables on a Model 19 for years as an LEO, and I can tell you that I banged those things on just about every door facing I passed through! I took a file and rounded over the outside corners of the sight blade to reduce the abrasion to my right forearm and other things the sights came into contact with during daily work duties.

That said, I am a Crimson Trace Fan. I don't use them as a replacement for the sights on my carry guns. I use them as an enhancement for the sights, particularly in low or no light situations. The laser is turned on with a correct grip on the revolver so it's always there on or near the target where you intend to shoot. It may put you off at first since all of us have a "wobble" zone when we aim at a target, and the laser dot makes that easy to see and kind of scary at first. I wondered how I could shoot as accurately as I do!! The wobble zone is not a problem, as long as it is not huge. Good shooting comes from good trigger control while maintaining the best sight picture one can manage.

For personal protection, if one can keep all rounds on a small paper plate (with the plate's location center mass on the target), that's pretty sufficient to do good work for personal protection. Not so much if you are a competition target shooter. Two different disciplines! What I like about the Crimson Trace laser grips is that first of all, your revolver will continue to fit in almost any holster you may have. Your grip will not be compromised. The batteries last a very long time. I strongly suggest you get the model that are rubber overmolded grips. For me, the models with out that feature tend to be pretty slick and I don't like them. I also get along better with the extra length grips as opposed to the boot style models, especially on J Frames. The laser dot is also a good reference of your trigger control when dry firing. You can see what happens to the gun when you drop the hammer. You can improve your follow through with practice and you can see what's happening.

As I said, I like the fixed sights. I do generally degrease the front sight, put a dab of white Testor's model paint there and let it dry, then follow that with a dab of the florescent green paint (you can use red, yellow, orange, or just use white) and let that dry well. That allows me to pick up that front sight more easily during the daylight periods. I adjust the laser dot to be only barely visible above the front sight when sighting at a wall and landing about 15 yards away from the gun. Most of the dot is hidden slightly low rather than sitting on top of the front sight. That point of aim will not be any kind of problem within 15 yards if you see the full dot when you fire. A bit of time on a paper target will let you fine tune the laser dot aim for your preferences. I highly recommend the CT laser grips for a revolver that has CC or nightime home protection. You don't give up anything by having them in place, and you gain a good deal of practical aiming ability along the way! Nice gun, BTW!!!

ktom, thanks for covering all the bases. i purchased a LCR last year for primarily home defense, but was turned off by the recoil, even with target non-p 38s. decided k frame would be better fit for very occasional practice comfort. 64-3 will be for home protection only, so with my aging eyes, will follow your advice and shop for ct laser grip. from eastern pa.

This is my night stand gun. 64-3. I practice, and can put the laser dot on things by pointing, not aiming. Bob
