I have a friend who is a Macomb County,(Michigan), sheriff's deputy, mounted division, who is required to carry a wheel gun. They have a choice of S&W's. Model 65, 66, or 686. They can only be the 4" model. My friend carries M66-1 or his 66-2, whichever he feels like that day. Their Armorer is an expert on these weapons, and keeps them running.

Great thread! I was at a LE career fair at Camp Pendleton a few weeks ago. When I came to the LASD booth, there was a venerated Sergeant there with a K-Frame Model 64/67 with Goncalo Alves Targets in a Safety Speed breakfront in Black Basket.

He was wearing a PR-24 and a double speedloader pouch along with a single handcuff pouch.

If I go back into LE after the Corps, I would carry my 627-5, 686-6 Plus or any of my modernized .38/.357 K-Frames. I don't feel under-armed with a revolver.

I will admit that 80 rounds in your possession feels comforting, but I prefer the revolver to the pistol. That said, I remain current with SIGs, S&Ws, GLOCKs, Berettas and 1911s.

If I were to carry the K-Frames, I would use the new old stock Hume H900 holsters and have Tex Shoemaker make me their Triple Threat speedloader carrier for three COMP III or K-Frame JET loaders. They are in my experience as fast or faster than reloading a pistol...Provided you practice, practice, practice.

My favorite HD/SD load is the .38 +P Golden Saber with the Speer 135gr GDHP +P falling in behind. Plenty of oomph out of a 4-inch Service Revolver for felon repellent.

I work plain clothes and most of the time I have a 3" Ruger WC GP100 strapped on under a T-shirt.
I wanted a M&P R8. I got one, ordered holsters and grips but that revolver turned out to be a real lemon. CS did absolutely nothing to fix it either so I sold it at a loss and went with the Ruger.

I intend to try the M&P R8 again soon though. Despite my awful experience there is something about that revolver that speaks to me.

My work outlawed all revolvers in the early '90s when Glock 17s were bought and issued to all staff. From that point, no personal weapons were allowed for duty and the approved off duty list was Glocks only. A few years ago, I got my CWP and started carrying revolvers off duty again loaded with our old Winchester 158 grain LHP loads. Actually went to the range today and practiced with old 4" M10, newer 442, and issued Glock 23.

I just got some extra firepower to back up my revolver. A few years ago I had to fire on an SUV that had intentionally hit another officer. Eight rounds of 5.56 into the engine area did cause a massive oil leak. Other officers fired numerous handgun rounds into the vehicle. It traveled another 4 blocks or so before it quit. Today, I picked up a brand new 1885 Winchester Trapper in 45-70. It may only be a single shot, but hopefully, one 500 grain FMJ will do the trick. Besides, it goes well with my patrol rifle which is now a Winchester 1894 Legendary Lawmen 30-30. Maybe the administration and the media will quit whinning about the "militarization" of law enforcement.

Within the past few months NYPD announced they will no longer permit/support use of the last model 64 DAO revolvers still being carried. There are probably some smaller departments still out there that allow revolvers to be carried, but likely a lot fewer than in 2015...

There was a tragic double homicide of two deputies that had transported a violent felon to court. He managed to disarm one then started shooting. If the deputies had been armed with revolvers equipped with magna triggers this would have been prevented. There is definitely a place for revolvers in law enforcement.

During my time I carried a Model 10, 19, 66 until we went to Sig 226 semi autos. I can shoot the Sig better than any of the revolvers, and reload much quicker. While I really like revolvers, they are outdated for law enforcement. Anyone still carrying one is putting themselves at risk. Maybe as a backup an airweight might be a good choice, but there are better options there also.
To answer the OP I don't know of anyone carrying a revolver however I know there are some still out there.

I like revolvers as much as anyone. But they're far more complex than semis, have more moving parts, and are more prone to failure.

Flintlock pistols gave way to cap 'n' ball single-action revolvers that gave way to single-action cartridge revolvers that gave way to double-action revolvers that gave way to semis. It's all about PROGRESSION of technology.

I love J-Frame revolvers, but were my life in jeopardy, I'd want a Performance Center 1911 3" 9MM. They're close to the same size.

I doubt that there is a law enforcement agency in the nation that issues revolvers. There might be, but it would be rare.

How do you know this? Did you read the agency's report of this investigation?

Prior to semis, how many cops were murdered with their own revolvers?

We're not "LEO"'s but we're kind of in the same family tree, so to speak

Many state DOC's seemed to cling to the wheelgun and 12 gauge pump much longer then police agencies, probably due to the fact that we're not police and our weapons are purely for defense, we don't drive around stopping crime, the guns are for protection for events like taking inmates to hospitals or Dr. appointments. So there isn't as much of an urgent need to "upgrade" to auto loaders that will be locker dust magnets and belt ornaments, for the most part, when the revolvers will serve just as well. Plus revolvers are more "dummy proof", you drop the rounds in the cylinder, close it and holster it. Reverse when you get back from the trip. The less people messing with mags and racking slides, unloading the chamber, probably the better.

Is lethal force not authorized to prevent escape of the prisoner?
It is here in Alabama. When I was a CO we were trained to use it to prevent escape, and tower guard could use rifles to stop one past the last fence. Has been a while though, early 90s.

My local bank was robbed at gunpoint last year, so they hired an armed "security guard" to protect the place. I believe he's a senior citizen and his uniform would indicate he's not active police.

He carries a well worn N Frame with worn target stocks in a well worn brown leather holster.

When I went in last time he yelled at me to take off my hat and sunglasses (they are prescription photo greys), and of course i did comply and then walked into the desk (I can't see without them), so because of my issue I didn't ask him what model it was.

I saw an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Deputy last night at a football game. He appeared to be carrying a 4” 686 or 66. I have seen a few others from this agency carrying Smith revolvers.

Heh... I ran across one doofus when I was doing a PT shift as a armed guard in the early 90s. Young and dumb... Was carrying 4 revolvers on his belt. A Rossi 971, Taurus 85, S&W Tapered barrel M-10, and a Taurus Model 83. ( S&W M-15 copy)

No flashlight, one no name cuffs.

Was at an abandoned industrial site so management figured no harm there.

When he left from his shift an hour before me he had only 3 guns on his belt... I had the Tapered barreled M-10 for $150 (1993ish)

If I recall correctly the BAU is VERY easy going about what sort of weapons agents assigned to it carry. They are not required to carry standard or issue weapons (or at least were not the last time I checked, about four years back). I don't remember the TV show ever giving any sort of back-story about why the Reid character carries that weapon. Maybe he just likes it.

Seems I recall Joe Mantegna (Rossi) on one of the gun shows on Outdoor Channel talking about the very subject. The Actors to an extent will use what they prefer and that actor was enamored with the revolver and OWB appendix position. The rest went along with the tech advisor, with Joe Mantegna choosing the 1911 as former HRT and personal choice.

I may be wrong on this.

If you are referring to "Criminal Minds" (I never watched it but the non-gun lover in the house did

), his character was unable to qualify with a pistol but was able to do so with the 3" revolver. Of course, carried in the "gun guy" AOWB position and flopping around all the time...

I have a very unique position with a state agency that has law enforcement powers. I don’t believe I have ever open carried a revolver in uniform, but I conceal a revolver a lot. I may occasionally open carry a revolver wearing street clothes but with a badge showing. A Glock 27 gets carried concealed most days though. The rare event I suit up in a uniform I carry a Glock 23 on a full duty belt.

I am proud to say I'm one of the dinosaurs still carrying a revolver on the job. Over the last 21 years I have carried a variety of wheel guns, but at present I'm qualified with the snub SP-101, 64-2, 3" 65-3, and the 340 M&P. I shoot the same qual course as the semi's, same time limits, and haven't scored less than 99% in over 10 years. As you can guess from the multitude of snub nose revolvers I work in plain clothes as an investigator. I have been fortunate all these years to have jobs that allowed personally owned firearms.

I persist with my revolvers because I have confidence with them and my ability to use them if things go south. The revolver may not be the best option for everyone, but it's the best for me.

I started my LEO career with a S&W Model 19 and retired carrying a 1911. Now retired, I am required to qualify annually to maintain my carry status on my retired id and I use that same model 19 for that purpose. It's sort of a step back in time.

I thought that I read in either a newspaper or gun magazine that the NYCPD stopped the carrying of revolvers, by the older officers who were carrying them.
In Phila the older officers are still permitted to carry them on duty, if they are grandfathered in and qualify with them yearly. You see them at the Airport and at court.

There aren’t that many LE agencies in Alaska, but I don’t know if any carrying revolvers. Back in the day you saw just as many 357s as anything. The state guys all have Glock 22s and nothing else can be carried. Anchorage Police Department has Glock 20s.

Yes, NCPD no longer authorizes revolvers for duty. They can be carried as backups and as offduty firearms for those on the job before the magic date 20 or so years ago.

Fairbanks PD uses either a Glock 21 or 20. I can't remember which.

Edit- quite a few of the tribal "officers" I saw carried a revolver of some type.

I retired September 17th and turned in the issued 4 inch S&W Model 686-6. I wore it in a Gould & Goodrich "Cruiser" holster on my duty belt with 2 double speedloader pouches, 26" expandable baton, G26 Taser, handcuffs, and a Motorola handheld with a S&W Model 642-2 in my off-side cargo pocket. The agency won't let officers buy their duty weapons and objected to privately owned backups. The 686-6 spent the last week of work in the ultrasonic cleaner, and I carried my 4 inch S&W Model 65-1 in spite if the agency. My chief and our director both knew and didn't care.

The last person carrying a revolver is a dispatcher with what I believe is the last 4 inch, nickle-plated Model 10-5 in the inventory. She's had it a lo-o-o-o-o-ong time.

When I started, the armorer issued me a 4 inch Model 64 and a sack with eighteen 158 grain RNL .38 Special rounds. I never carried them, and they never got them back.

Maybe on TV, but real Agents (BAU or otherwise) have almost no choice about what to carry. The POW list is just Glocks now, so its either the issue Glock or a POW Glock. Even the SWAT guys aren't permitted to carry their POW 1911s anymore.

I’ve been a LEO for 23 years. Been a Firearms Instructor for 18 years. Always carried a Glock. Even had to borrow a wheel gun to go instructor school. At that time you still had to qualify and be able to teach revolver shooting. Now it’s not taught at all. Maybe it’s me getting older and being more nostalgic, but I got into S&W wheel guns a few years ago and now carry them almost exclusively. I’m a plain clothes Detective and wear a highly customized 66-8 with a 2 3/4”’ barrel every day. When I’m in uniform, I carry a 66-2 with a 4” barrel. I shoot perfect qualification scores with both of them, and the Glock Gen 5 9mm that my agency issued me this year. I love my wheel guns. Carry a Glock 43 in my pocket as a backup, but really don’t think I’ll need it with six rounds of Remington 125 grain semi jacketed hollow points ready to go. I can keep up with most of the young guys reloading, and even finish ahead of some of them when qualifying. Wheel guns aren’t dead. They aren’t antiquated, most young people just don’t think they are sexy or know how to stage the trigger on them. I have lots of younger officers ask me about them. And some even want to try wheel gunning themselves.

I can't get over how many young guys I meet on the job who have never even shot a revolver. Many of them have told me I'm the only guy they've ever seen carry a revolver. Part of the reason they think the revolver is obsolete is because they've never seen one really used.

A good example was my last requal. In a timed drill I drew my 65-3 and fired 24 rounds in 24 seconds. I could have done better, but pulling the last speedloader out of a pants pocket cost me a couple of seconds. Several guys came up to me later and told me that until they watched me they didn't believe a revolver was capable of that kind of performance. None of them were going to trade their Glocks and M&P's for a K frame, but the condescending remarks about revolvers stopped.

The remaining 150 police officers — who all joined the force before 1993, when the .9mm semi-automatic became the department's service weapon — have until Aug. 31 to be trained on new guns.

Were I given the option of carrying either a Glock in 9x19 or a S&W, Colt or Ruger in .357, 10mm, .41 magnum, .44 Spl or magnum or .45 Colt, I'd choose the wheel gun. As it stands I'll be forced to swap my SIG P-229R for a G19M in the near future and as little as I care for the SIG I well and truly despise the Glock.

Reminded me. Detroit Police issued a Model 10 and the Official Police for many years. Department required the bullet to be the .38 Special 158 Lead Round nose load no HP's.

They also allowed their Officers to use a personally bought revolver in any caliber suing a lead bullet load.

Many of the savvy Cops carried an 4" N frame in either .44 Magnum, .41Magnum, or .45 Colt.

I know not pertinent to the thread, but still neat history.

When I worked for Savannah Police, we were issued Model 67's. One of the older Detectives carried a nickel model 39-2 9mm, and another, of all things, a 9mm Radom (there has to be a joke in there somewhere).

Retired Regional Commander with TXDPS here. DPS requires uniformed officers to carry issue sidearms while in uniform. Last discussion that I had on the subject, they were considering switching to 9mm and looking at S&W.

When we transitioned to the Sigs, my prediction was that we would go back to revolvers without hammer spurs. The only reason my crystal ball burst was the development of DAO semi automatics.

I still qualify with a Sig 229, decocker. I think it makes the training officers nervous. For daily carry, I use either a 60 or a 42. Yes, I’m an antique, but I still like revolvers. I have purchased a Glock 17, but I haven’t learned to love it yet. Maybe I should have gotten the G 42.

I got into LE in 1992 so there were still a few revolvers in holsters. But like most of the young officers, I wanted the “latest and greatest” equipment. My first duty weapon was a Beretta 92 and then Glocks 19, and 34. I carried a Md 37 Airweight in a Cobra Gunskins ankle holster as a back up for many years. 26 years later, I find myself gravitating towards revolvers. It’s funny how that goes. I now like beautiful wood and metal finishes more than high tech polymers.
