S&W 25-2: need your help
Hi everyone,
next week I will have a 25-2. serial number N656638.
In your opinion, is it well a 45 acp or a 45 LC?
and for you is it a 6'' or a 6,5"?
Thank you

Usually the 25's with even numbered dash numbers are 45ACP (25-2) the odd numbered dash number are 45Colt (25-3). Measure from the face of the cylinder to the end of the muzzle for barrel length.
Hope this helps. Nice gun by the way.

I believe it should a 45 ACP from 1979-80.
The SCSW states the 6" barrels started in 1979 so yours could be either.
I'm not good enough to recognize a 1/2" difference.

Assuming it hasn't been modified from original, or is incorrectly stamped (does happen) it should be in 45 ACP. The 6.5" barrel was standard until around 1979 when S&W made them all 6" for uniformity. My 25-2 was shipped in 1980 and still has the 6.5" tube so they must have been using up old inventory of barrels for a while. I think yours looks like a 6.5"

It should be .45 acp use it with half/full moon clips. I prefer to use auto rim loads, they're much easier to deal with. Regardless of what you choose to shoot, it's a great revolver and lots of fun.

I agree with Saxon Pig that the barrel looks longer than 6" so my guess is 6.5" also. But it is hard to tell from a picture.
Still going by looks, the gap between the rear of the cylinder and the recoil plate appears to be big enough to accommodate .45 ACP with moon clips.

Oh last question, do you know if the 25 model has been in service, used by some units police?

Before I wrecked my knees, which kept me out of law enforcement, I had intended to carry my 25-2 as a duty gun. This was in the 1980s, when most departments were still using revolvers. Still have a thumbbreak duty holster for it in mint condition.

Regardless of what the barrel length turns out to be, that's a really nice pickup, and you are going to love shooting that revolver. My 25-2 (from 1975 - ACP and 6 -1/2") is just plain fun to shoot, scary accurate, and about the last of my few dozen S&W revolvers I'd part with if I had to thin the herd. I'm one of those who absolutely hate moon clips, so I load .45 AR for it.

Really, a half an inch isn't all that much difference. It might matter if you already have a holster for a six inch. But it will not look like it does now for very long if you carry it in a holster, so that may not matter anyway.
I would guess that it is possible that some law enforcement agency somewhere did issue them, but not likely (again, I'm guessing). As mentioned, it is also possible that an individual LEO may have carried one when they could chose their own side arm, but then it would not be standard issue.

I worked with an officer in Alabama that carried a 6 1/2" M25-2. It was his personal handgun. At that time, we were all required to buy our own sidearms.
At different times, I carried a M27 converted to .44 Special, a 6 1/2" HE .455 converted to .45 Colt, a 4" M25-5, a 4" M57, and a couple of 1911s. I even carried a 4 5/8" .45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk and a S&W .32-20. I was also known to carry a Webley & Scott .455 MK V converted to .45 ACP while on a part-time job.
I also carried a few 1917s, both S&Ws and Colts.
Not all at the same time, of course.

Model 25-2 is always a .45 ACP and it sure looks like a 6 1/2"......
If I am not wrong, the Modesto 25-2 was a 6 1/2" until 1980 and than changed to a 6" barrel...... You will really like this revolver, baby it and it will be a real shooter for you. I have 3 of the Model 25-2 6 1/2" revolvers and I intend to hang on to all of them !!!

goatsnguns:
You may have answered a question I've had since 1979.
I bought two 25-5 revolvers, .45-Colt.
I asked for consecutive serial numbers, but got them one apart:
N661 392 and N661 394. Could it be that "393" would have been .45ACP?

Muley Gil:
your post made me smile.
My first LEO job was as a part-time deputy sheriff. My only gun was a Colt GM. I was assigned to a grizzled old deputy who taught me a lot. I showed him the Colt and he took me to his house where he loaned me a 25-5 .45-Colt. Biggest handgun I had seen to that time. I remember thinking "big, lead bullets!" We popped cans and bottles in his back yard until he felt I could hit with it. Early '70s, the style was one-hand hold at arm's length. My, how times have changed.
Except, that fast-forward to 1979 and I bought two 45-Colt 25-5s of my own. I load "big lead bullets" for it.

My first badge toting was as a reserve deputy, earning college credit for a law enforcement internship. The only LE type handgun I owned was a 1911. When i showed up toting it, the chief deputy grumbled a bit, but allowed it.
He was agin 1911s, due mostly to the large hole in the top of his desk, placed there by another deputy having an AD. I soon went out and bought a 1917 S&W. Gotta make the chief happy, you know!

That one looks new to me! Congratulations!
By the way, did the seller pay the $25 for losing the bet (that it is a 6")?
