Default Highway Patrolman value question

There's an early Model 28-2 I'm considering purchasing. It's a 4" gun with grips numbered to the gun; has an early N serial number (only 5 digits after the N); probably a 98% gun if you go by that rating system; comes with the original box with the end label with matching serial # and cleaning kit and paperwork.

Mechanically it's excellent; bore is excellent. The only issue is a small chunk missing from the front bottom of the left grip panel.

Model 28's have really gone up. Any idea on what something like this is worth?

Thanks a ton,

Paul Moore

Here is one that sold recently online:

SMITH AND WESSON 28-2 LNIB 357 HIGHWAY PATROL : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

My observation on the bidding is two highly motivated people went above $700 and kept going. I think your description of the model 28 you see probably fits at about that amount.

Murphydog,

The seller told me I could have it for $750, shipped. Is that the range you were thinking?

That's a fair price if that's what you're willing to pay. You might consider giving him a counter offer in the $650 to $700 range, just because you still have to pay the transfer fee at your FFL. If he won't budge, then you tried and if you're willing pay the price, you both get what you wanted.

Good Luck and good shooting.

Yes, and that $938 plus shipping is a tad high . Please let us know what you decide.

That's a fair price on a very nice gun. $50 +/- won't mean much after you own it, especially as the years go by.

glad I opened this threat, I was going to put my 28 on consignment for much less, have no box or papers though.

Up until about 3 years ago the Model 28-2 was under valued and could be bought for around $550 in very good condition. The prices have risen considerably in the past 3 years and now the price you stated is a good price for one in the condition you describe for a 4 inch Model 28-2.
