Default 36-1 date of manufacture

I'm looking at purchasing a S&W Model 36-1 with 3" pinned barrel, in .38 special, fixed groove rear sight, front ramp sight, 3 screw, contoured ejector button. The serial number is 55J478. I don't really understand the numbering as listed in the S&W book I have. Please advise. Thanks!

John

Are you certain the third character is a J? I'm no expert, but that doesn't seem right to me. As I look in my Supica book, the serial number you posted does not seem to fit. The experts will be here soon. Standby.

You're not alone . . . there is a typo in the SCS&W 3rd edition. The s/n range for 1971-1972 should read 1J1-999J99. That would place your 55J478 in late 1971 or early 1972.

Russ

edit to add: welcome to the forum. search the revolver sections for model 36-1 and you'll find lots of good information.
