Model 27-2 Cylinder Issue
A buddy of mine and I are pretty big fans of the Model 27. We both purchased 27-2s recently. I purchased a 5" from '79, and he got a 4" from '78. Mine has been running flawlessly, but his has had a problem quite regularly of the cylinder locking up when shooting .357 mag, and then in turn the trigger and hammer locking up. It takes various combinations of working the trigger, the hammer, trying the cylinder release, biting your tongue to the left, and crossing your eyes to get the thing to move again and open up. Any model 27 gurus on here have any ideas about what might be causing this? Thanks in advance for any advice. Also because I know everyone likes pictures, below are some pictures of mine. I like the original grips, but I think the hogues are pretty good looking too.

Here are my three stock answers. Check under the ejector star for any loose powder that may be preventing the ejector star from fully seating. Check to make sure the ejector rod has not started to work loose. If your friend is shooting reloads check for "case jump", meaning that the bullets were not crimped tight enough and can be forced forward in the shell casing.
Best of luck.

The ejector star and rod were the first things we check. The star is clean and the rod is tight. Also neither of us reload. All factory ammo. I'm wondering if its something with the cylinder stop or the hand possibly. I didn't know if there were any common issues with the 27 that cause this problem.

See if the Ejector Rod is bent at all.
If it has even a slight bend, it will cause it to bind when cocking one of the cylinders.

My revolver drill:
1. Thorough cleaning.
2. Tighten ejector rod.
3. Gunsmith.

Check the hammer nose bushing. If it is recessed in the recoil shield the primer will back out of the fired case a small amount making the action difficult to operate.

Check the gap on the cylinder and the barrel. Mine had that problem.

Guys, thanks for all of the responses. I haven't had a chance yet, but will be checking the 27 in question for all of the issues that you have all mentioned.

What do fired cases look like? It almost sounds like cases are dragging against the breech face, or primer flowing into the firing pin opening. Does the gun function normally when unloaded?

I have a model 19 I just bought that has this same problem-the cylinder stop does not drop down all the time-you can turn the gun a certain way and cock the hammer a certain way and the stop drops down. Mine also has a big turn line on the cylinder. The cylinder stop pops back up as soon as the cylinder starts turning. I haven't taken the side plate off yet to check the problem. Someone might have tampered with the timing on mine or maybe the stop is gummed up.

The gun does function properly when unloaded, and also when shooting 38 special. It only has this issue when shooting .357 magnum.
