Default New to this side.....

Been hanging out in the 1896-1961 side of the house.

I just bought a beautiful 4" Nickel 29-2. In the case, looks like it's only been test fired.

I have zero desire to resell it. But, if I can increase its value.....
Would getting it lettered do so?
Thank you for your opinions
Bob

Thumbs up

We like pictures over here also.

Congratulations Bob.

Yes we would like to see it.

If it has the N's where it should I don't think it will increase the value.
It may make a buyer feel more comfortable if you were selling it.

You've only strayed about 20 years from 1961, at most .

It is unlikely a letter would increase its value significantly; a collector may pay the extra amount you spent for it. The only sure way to 'decrease' its value, at least to the NIB/test fired only crowd, would be to shoot it .

I'd get a letter. Just think, 50 years from now your great grand kids probably won't have a clue as to what kind of gun it is, and even the letter with Roy's signature will be collectable by then. I wish I could find a 29-2 like the one you just picked up.

Default Last ones....I promise

NICKEL 29-2-10.jpg

NICKEL 29-2-11.jpg

Not sure exactly where I should find all the "N's". Seen it on the back of the cylinder and in front of the serial number on the yoke/frame (???).

Thats all the paperwork I got with it. Is there more? I would think so. If any body has pics of the other/rest of the paper work, will you please send me some?

The serial # is N6483XX. If I read the Catalog correctly, that would put it shipped in 79/80 time frame?

I gotta learn how to post larger pics.

Thank you,
Bob

A fine lookin 44.

I have one like that from around '80-'81 & I'll look to see what, besides the inst. sheet there is in the box.

GF

(It's a '77 revolver and there's a holster, knife, ammo pamphlet and a warranty card plus one little paper with a "caution" statement.)

Bob,
That's a beauty.

You should find a "N" on the left side of the butt frame under the stock (grip). The N just prior to 6483xx is part of the serial # and does not denote nickel. N frame revolvers went from a S prefix to a N prefix roughly 1970.

I agree the serial # for this one dates it to 1979-1980

John

If I understand this correctly......
The model 29-2 has both "S" pre fix and "N" prefix.
From what I've read, the S prefix is early, (mid 1960's?). The N prefix is later (mid 1970's?). This prefix change was during the -2 "phase"?

Are my time frames correct? What is/was the significance of the "S" to the "N"?
Thank you
Bob

The "S" to "N" change came about due to government rules on having non repeated serial numbers throughout a companies product lines I think after MLK and RFK got assassinated and the the gun control act that followed, IIRC. The "N" prefix serials started around 1969.

That is a beautiful 4" nickel 29-2 man. I am a sucker for a beautiful nickel Smith. I have a nickel 4" 27-2 in the same shape as your 29 and so far I've held off bringing it to the range. Since I have 4 other 27s, I'm not as tempted to run rounds through it as I would otherwise.
