I would like to have help identifying this revolver. and possibly pricing it.

From my search it looks like it may be a model 10-5? M&P?

sometimes I see model 10 sometimes I see model 10-5 is there a difference?

I believe m&p stands for military and police? which means it was originally issued or manufactured for the military or police?

The SN starts with a C will that give me a year it was manufactured?

any and all information will be grateful! please let me know if ive missed any details?

Without checking the book, as I remember the C guns ran from about 1950 up through 1968. I don't think the 10-5 started until around 1968.

Welcome! From the photo you have a .38 Military & Police. It is simply a model name but it happened to have been sold in large quantities to both. After 1957 it was called the model 10 but kept the long name.

As DocB mentioned, the C prefix puts it between 1948 and 1967.

Thanks for the info thus far. its not my gun but I was looking to maybe purchase it. I dont have anymore pics atm. but when I can I will update the post with more information from the link you provided!

at the moment can either anyone give fair price that I should spend on it? if you still need more info to make that kind of decision I will understand!

Muzzle wear,faux stocks,extremely common model.....I can't see more than 350.

What Camster said. Even at $350 I would be looking at a pre-war gun. Maybe offer $250 and try to keep it below $300.

I was told by the current owner its a model 10-2. I will be stopping by to look at it tomorrow hopefully. it was hard to even extract the model number from the current owner. so I doubt I will have any new information before then. but thanks for your guys help so far!!

The current owner is probably correct about it being a 10-2.

1) It has to be at least a 10-2 (1961), note the groove behind the knurling on the extractor rod. This denotes left-handed threads.

2) The gun has the standard barrel, therefore it cannot be a 10-3 (heavy barrel).

3) It appears the gun still has the "trigger-guard" screw which was eliminated on the 10-4 in 1962.

So apparently the gun dates somewhere within 1961-1962. SN should be somewhere in the C474149 - C622699 range.

This is all from simply being observant and using references available (SCSW).

The faux antler stocks appear to be Fitz, common through the 1960s. If you are looking just for a shooter don't let these put you off. It would cost $35-75 for a set of period correct factory stocks which could be either the standard flat butt style, or the rounded side-to-side P.C. (Plain clothes) type.

I would think from $300-375 would be a good range for price. Low-ball him at $250 and see if he bites.

You can always send the serial # to s&w they will give you a production date and answer most questions in an email...the last 3 emails I sent them were answered in 1-2 days.. Pretty nice of them I thought..

Except for the muzzle wear, it appears to be in pretty decent shape. If the seller refuses to go much lower, arguing that the Model 10-2 is comparatively rare and tends to command a moderate premium over much more common models like the 10-5, he'd be right, but in that case you should probably pass since you are not collecting type models. You should be able to find a 10-5 with original stocks for that or less in the same condition.

On a simple face to face transaction,I do not think that 250 is being unreasonable.
Certainly more than he would get at his lgs.

If you look at it, you will see MOD. 10-x stamped on the frame in the yoke area. x will probably be 2, for the reasons previously stated. If you want a shooter, I think $300 would be pretty much tops, maybe $325. Values vary in different areas of the country, but generally any K-frame in reasonable cosmetic condition with no mechanical problems will be worth at least $300 in a private sale.

Good news! I got the gun for even cheaper then anyone has suggested!!

it does have some muzzle wear and some light scratches. but all in all its a pretty interesting gun has some history.

Since no one addressed this part for you, I'll provide an answer.
Yes. The dash numbers indicate engineering changes (usually improvements) in the design as time went along. The Model 10 was rather an odd duck in that for most of its life there were two dash numbers being used concurrently, indicating two different barrel weights.
In the case of the -5 (which you specifically asked about) it indicates a change to the width of the front sight and applies only to examples with the tapered (sometimes called "standard") barrel and the recently deleted cylinder stop screw (Model 10-4). The concurrent Model 10 with a heavy barrel was the Model 10-6. Both the Model 10-5 and 10-6 were produced from 1962 through the end of 1976.

after getting a better look at it I discovered it does say 10-2 under the extractor arm

I bought a 10-8 JP marked gun recently for $250 with orig grips. It has the smoothest D A trigger pull and the sgl action trigger breaks like glass. It has the heavy barrel and is now my truck gun here in Wyo, love it....Trader
