Bought the story - paid too much - so what
Good morning from Southern AZ. Seldom ever post, but check in here every day. Certainly not a S&W collector, no safe queens, just an accumulator, and a sucker for a good story. Local elderly gentleman I knew well, passed on. WWII vet and former FBI and State Department employee. Widow tells me she doesn't want his gun around, so consigned it to local sporting goods store. I go buy the gun within the hour. Mod. 27-2 with 3 1/2" barrel, good shape. All numbers match, including grips. Cleaned it up and Ren wax it good. I have half dozen 27s, but none 3 1/2". So I paid a grand, which may be too much, but the original owner was a friend, and I bought the story. Would have paid more. Here are photos. Didn't get all the wax cleaned off, but you get the picture. Anyone tell me what year it was made? Not that it makes any difference.

I'd say late 1968 or early 1969. I wouldn't have had a problem with $1K for that gun, no problem at all.

Made in 1968. Very nice example. Congrats.
And I doubt you paid too much!

Your gun appears to be in pretty good condition, short barrel is somewhat a desirable length, S prefex on the serial number, I'd say you did well.

I don't know your old friend but I imagine I would have felt the same way. The price paid was fair enough and now you have his gun to remind you of him. A happy ending all around. Good for you.

I eventually get over paying too much as long as it was something I really wanted.
You have a nice firearm, enjoy it and know that it will be doing far better against the economy that 1k in the bank would have.
IMO you should have no regrets on this purchase.

Around here that would not be a good deal.
It would be a great deal.
And you got to help your friends widow. Good all around.

Its to bad the old gal didnt come to you directly instead of involving the middle man. You both could have done better. Nice piece however.

I don't think...
Not a screaming deal, but you did pretty good. I don't think a grand is outrageous at all for that.

Uh, not sure if you were being cleverly sarcastic in your post, but I don't think a grand is out of line for that gun at all. In my local area we don't get to touch any N-frame for less than $1,000 and that's a very nice shape 27-2 with (my favorite) 3.5" barrel. If I found that deal I'd have jumped on it with both feet, even without the story.

S305,000 – S329,999……Late 1968 – Early 1969 (manufacture)
I have one listed about 3,000 higher which shipped in July 1968.

Remember that saying about "buying the gun and not the story" ONLY applies to situations where you can't verify the story, and is meant to warn of falling for gun-fish stories.
Not only is there nothing wrong with paying more for a gun with a story, for my collection that's what I prefer as long as the story is verified, as yours obviously is.
Great deal for all involved.

Real nice 27 you got there and you didn't get taken to the bank at all. For a 3 1/2" "S" serial 27-2 in that shape you would pay quite a bit more on GunBroker and you got to physically handle and examine the pistol before purchase.

Thanks for the comments!! I likely would have bought the gun whatever the price, but the reassurance is certainly comforting. I started accumulating S & W revolvers in 1974 after sharing a table at a gun show in Missoula Montana with a tall cowboy with a 10 gallon hat by the name of Elmer. He really got me started, and I have attempted to add 1 or 2 each year since, however not really up on current prices. None of my accumulation is particularly special. No boxes or tools. --boxes don't shoot, and I shoot all my guns.

You got any guns that that old cowboy Elmer passed to you? If so I just might buy the story on those. . . . . Nice 27!

No Jeff. He was a very imposing cowboy, and had many stories, and always many listeners. It was a joy to have him around. We shared tables at 4 shows that year (I paid, he shared at my request) and he always had a few 5- screw 29s with all the trimmings, and he did sell them. Looking back, I should have been a bit wiser. All I have left is the memories, a box of 44 mags that he reloaded, and a couple signed books.

Can't be Elmer Keith; he was only about 5'6". But he was a giant in many other ways.

Everything old has a story. Everything new will have a story in the future. My brand new m58, m57, m29-10 there story starts on page one I paid $699 each for them. From here who knows where the story will go.
Every gun has a story to tell.
Nice S series m27 n frame.

Nice revolver. When you know the previous owner spending a little more doesn't really matter. You may know more of the real story than the dealer does. Many years ago I went to the estate sale of a man who worked in my building. I really didn't know him but I knew of him and the type of man he was. I bought his Remington 870 Wingmaster and was told by a local gun shop that I paid about $100 too much. I didn't care as I expected he would keep his guns in emaculate condition. I was not disappointed. I still have that shotgun and it is in just about as good a shape now as it was then.

There are levels of "the story" as was pointed out above. The ones that I always buy are the one's that start "I got that old pistol in 1940 when I walked into the Junction Hardware and I saw...". I always buy that one. Guns I can find anywhere, but an old man's memories, true or not, are hard to come by these days.

WOW! If Elmer was only 5'6" I must be 4'10". Perhaps it was the high heels on those boots he always wore, with the pants legs of the fancy Western style suits tucked inside, or the 2' tall hat that was permanently planted on his head. The Elmer Keith that I knew was much taller than 5'6".

I think you got a nice one at a nice price. That could be a birthday gun for me, so I could have seen myself paying more. Enjoy it and think of your friend when you take it to the range.

Just from the hardware standpoint you got a pretty good deal. Chances are if you Gunbrokered it you would come out way, way ahead.
Too bad she didn't sell it to you directly, she could have had a couple hundred extra to put in her pocket...
