Default 629 V Comp SN

I recently acquired a pre lock 629 V Comp and am curious about the method used to "engrave" the SN on the bottom of the Frame. The number appears to have "burned" in, is black in color and shows no metal removal. Does anyone know what method was used to do this?

I've always thought they did the numbers you describe with a laser....not sure if that's correct though.
