Default New to forum

I am new to the forum and have a few questions about a recently acquired .38 special. I will list some info about the handgun first and then ask my questions.

38 S&W Special CTG
Model 10-6
Serial # D589147

Questions:
What year was it made?
What is CTG?
How do I know if it is +P?
Is this a K frame model?

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

Welcome to the forum.
Probably 1974.
Cartridge.
It is generally assumed that model marked guns are fine with +Ps.
K frame, yes.

He beat me to it and might be right about 1973.

You sure picked a good first S&W revolver. Model 10 is a classic that every S&W fan should own.

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the info. I'm glad to hear it is a reliable and popular handgun. I actually came across it by shear luck. My wife's cousin traded it for a 1989 Ford F-150 that had an engine fire and needs some work, but has a great body (Florida truck). We live in Michigan, so an older vehicle with a great body is kind of a big deal up here. I got the .38, a leather holster, 100 rounds of standard ammo, 25 rounds of hollow point ammo and $125.00 in cash. I think I made out alright. Just got it Friday and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Hoping to go out Wednesday and put some rounds through it.

Nice mod 10, looks almost new. Resist any thoughts that you have to
"upgrade" as you go forward into S&W ownership. I have 357 and 44
magnums with adjustable sights but I still have a great fondness for
the simple model 10 and own several.

Default The Quintesssential Model 10

The Model 10 and it's similar "pre model" (prior to 1957 model number nomenclature) generic equivalent, really are quintessential S&W guns. They've been the 'meat and potato' handguns of a couple of generations (and still ever earlier models also similarly employed). Law enforcement, military elements, private security, plinkers, homeowners... and many more categories used, carried or at least associated with the Model 10 genre.
Likely even most otherwise specialized S&W collectors have at least one representation of the model if not several or more. So in your 'first' Smith, you've chosen well. And that also from a combination of good quality vintage as well as modern functional utility. A truly happy balance to my mind.

Now all that said, there's the matter of terminology here! In my SoCal beach area mentioning trading a nice body for a gun wouldn't compute. Not just that, happily with the typical attire here they don't even comport with 'concealed carry'!
And so...
Enjoy that nice Smith. Just the necessary warning that prolonged exposure tends to be addictive... to S&Ws that is!
And just...
My take
