Default Box Help

I am trying to help a friend in valuing his Model 17-3 box. Box is in good shape (as seen in pictures). Bottom of the box has no grease markings and is in excellent shape. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It would be late to have a bottom written SN, that pretty much went away by the time of the end labels. Without the contents, I would guess $30-40, unless the buyer had the gun in question.

appears gun shipped with Magnas. Murph is spot on. If I needed one and saw it at a show, I would go 30-40. They make neat boxes to store grips and parts in or crayons for the grand kids. If it was gold or red, different story. Mike 2796

Thanks guys for the info. Although I didn't know about the box value, I did tell him that it would be worth more with the gun and other contents that came with the box.

In a semi-related question, does anyone know why the end label is stuck on upside down? I have a couple of boxes and both are pasted upside down. Just wondering if Smith and Wesson did this for some reason or if they had a 50-50 chance to get it right and blew on a few occasions.

The guns were usually stacked upside down on shelves in the warehouse,so the labels were glued on so that the contents of the box could be ascertained without standing on your head. This helped to prevent a gun from falling to the floor if the box was removed from the stack using only one hand. If held by the top between thumb and fingers, the bottom, along with the gun could quite easily slip from one's grasp. Ask me how I know.

Thanks. Sounds like as good an explanation as any. Okay I'll bite. How do you know this.

To put it simply,I'm old and wise. And I read a lot.

p.s. As to the question I posed at the conclusion of my initial post,I didn't mean it LITERALLY. It refers to the fact that it has happened to me.
