Default Transition from S prefix to N

When did S&W go from the S serial number prefix to an N? I just picked up a 3.5" 27-2 with a serial of N123xx. Thanks and pictures to come when I receive it .

The standard reference states 1969 as the start of the N prefix, but also the S prefix in that year. Probably some overlap on late S and early N ship dates that year.

S&W started shipping N frames with serial numbers beginning with the letter N in the first half of 1970. Some S serial numbered revolvers were shipped as late as 1972, but there are very few of these.

Don't forget...the "S" 29-2 is bringing almost double the "N"
That started to appear in the 35th BBGV. Nice little plus in my collection.

I have a 27-2 serial S 298434 that is likely from 1968. Has numbered non-diamond Magnas. I saw a 27-2 with a serial about 50 lower with diamond Magnas. Must have been right around this time the change was being made.

I've wondered if they were called S frames prior to that?

No. They are called S-serial N frames.
