66-1 square butt information
I know this thread has had some coverage but I am still a little lost on my pistol. I have attached these pictures in hopes that someone can shed some light. I traded a 400 dollar laptop for it because the guy didn't know what he had. He said his dad was in the PD and gave him the gun. I refinished the grips and polished it up. Not till recently did I find out that technically it should be a round butt. However, what I was hoping to find out is weather it was shipped this way( I have read that some were and makes them more rare) or if it was smithed. Thanks for any information. If there are anymore camera shots that you need to determine anything else just let me know, and yes its pinned and bored. the serial number is 89k3xxx-i read this is the way to post the s/n with the three x's on the end.

Welcome! It's a nice 66-1, and this one has the correct round butt grip frame. The square butt frame flares outward at the bottom. I think the SN puts it in 1980 but someone will correct me if I am wrong.
You did well at $400 in trade value. Enjoy!

also, I have seen many differences of opinion on the current price for these. No intentions of selling(I would just have to get another gun to shoot myself in the foot for doing so) just curious on what yall think of the condition, price, Rarity, etc. Just to get more knowledge on what I have.

so I have been looking into serial number designations but I am not finding anything that matches what I have, can anyone tell me how to, or can decipher my serial and tell me how you did so. sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to be ignorant on anything I own. Thank you again.

The best published reference for all things S & W is the Standard Catalog of (S & W), 3rd edition. A 4th edition is coming soon. Several Forum members also keep their own serial number/date databases.
Depending on its exact condition, it is worth somewhere in the $650-700 range in the current market. Not rare but highly sought after as a CCW and collectible gun.

Price for M66-4
GB my be a decent place to check for comparable prices. The 66-1 should bring a premium due to it being one of the few variants with the P+R which most people will pay a premium for. This is a 66-4 I just sold all be it with a pair of $70 Ahrends for $750 cash. It made the buyer very happy as it should have. I got it for a very good price and needed some cash.

Yep, Being P&R I would expect it could bring in more than $750 as well.

Dang $750+ for a 66-1.....several years back I got a 66-1 to carry and "protect" my 66-nuttin with stainless sights........... now the -1s are going up and up.
Oh well nice problem to have I guess................guess I'll just carry my 3" -3s or -4..... no wait................
dadeveryday........ you did really well...... around here an extra, used laptop....loses value every day until it only has scrap value................ IMHO you got that 66 for next to nothing..........................
