Model 10 2.5" heavy barrel Michigan state police
I am hoping someone can help me with value on a model 10 2.5 inch heavy barrel. I know only approximately 780 were made for the FBI and MSP. I'm planning on buying it Monday but have been unable to find any pricing information online. Thank you!

I have never seen or heard of a 2.5" M10.

S&W did make the 2 1/2 inch Model 10 on contract for the two agencies mentioned.
In the FBI, at least, it was the forerunner to their last, and arguably best, revolver, the 3 inch round butt Model 13.
Originals had standard wood stocks.
The biggest issue I see in negotiating price on one of these is making certain it is original, rather than a gunsmith job. If it is not original, then I would pass and simply get a factory 3 inch.
See this thread:
2.5 inch fixed sight K frames?

The 2.5" m10 is listed in the standard catalog of Smith and Wesson as a scarce special order. 500 for the FBI and 280 for the Michigan State Police. That's why I'm having problems trying to determine the value.

He had the original wood stocks for it. The owner is a retired MSP captain. It was his service pistol.

As usual it depends on how badly you want it; but if a standard 2" model 10 of the same era is a $450 gun, figure a 50-75% or so premium over that? Usually a search of recent online sales would help with a value, but I don't recall ever seeing one for sale.

Have the seller set the price, you have to decide if its worth it to you or not.
Without any sales to reference I don't think I'd get too wild with the $$$.

I would call it a great deal, not much more than a much more common 2" version...be prepared for the "if you don't buy it I will" comments to follow...

BUY the gun!
I sold one 2-3 years ago for $1000.
I can't remember if it had a box, but I think it did. Sorry, but I sell guns for a living and that was many hundreds of guns back....
I know it had a Factory Letter.

Buy the gun and then letter it. The $500 asking price is not out of line for a gunsmith conversion, let alone an original MSP gun.

S&W only made 280 units, you have this for provenance and you haven't bought it yet!?

All of us will be checking the forum on Monday and Tuesday, waiting on photos! I know I'd especially like to see it with the original stocks on it.

I picked it up this morning. It's in really nice shape. The serial number is in the proper range for the MSP issue. I'm going to get it factory lettered.

Well, he definitely carried it with the original grips. They're not really bad, but they could use to be refreshed.

It did have the box, was NIB with factory letter.
$500 is a bargain, you don't see these on a regular basis, and a NIB unit would probably be in excess of $1000 these days...

I would have loved it nib, but I'll take it! I don't think I'll shoot it a lot, but it will get some range time.

Looks like it would be a well balanced piece. Very nice and it's good to have one a little different.

I put a few rounds through it this weekend. It has a fantastic trigger and shoots beautifully. I'm happy to own this classic.
