Default Happy, Happy, Happy After the Auction. I Hope!

I need to know if I did as good as I think I did yesterday at the Sheriff's Auction.
I know the HP was a good buy. I don't know anything about the grips, don't like 'em.
I had to pay $175 for this 6" Highway Patrolman. Serial number: N582XXX
I paid $420 for the 6" Colt Trooper CTG. Serial number 465XX.
This Colt I know absolutely nothing about. If someone can help me, on either one of the guns, that would be very much appreciated.

I'd say you got a great deal on both those revolvers! Nice find.

The stocks on the HP are worth what you paid for the gun.

You better keep an eye over your shoulder. IF they find out what those should have sold for, they may get a warrant for you.

You made out like a bandit...

Come on, are you pulling my leg? At those prices . Did they electro pencil property room numbers anywhere? Usually under the grips or under the top strap. I have also seen them on the back of the grip strap.

No, they had the evidence number in black marker ink, marked on the steel frame, which came off with a little degreaser and a soft rag. Imagine that. The police doing something to preserve the gun, only in our little county in Montana!

Good score. In Iowa I believe handguns are destroyed or sent to the DCI gun collection.

I'm sure the Colt is easily worth what you paid and as others have mentioned the Highway Patrolman would sell for a couple times what you paid.

Those factory finger groove stocks will sell for what you paid for the gun.

The price you paid for the Colt is about 1/4 - 1/3 below what I would expect it to fetch.

My experience with live auctions is that $500 guns usually sell for $1,400. You scored for sure.

You had a great auction! I went to sheriff's auction here in Tulsa a few years ago and bought two revolvers, a Colt Lawman 2" nickle and a 586 4" blue. Both were in excellent shape. The 586 had some muzzle wear but otherwise fine. At the time, all the bidders were wanting high capacity 9mms so I felt like I got a good deal. I carried that Lawman to a lot of gun shows before I got rid of it. No one wanted a 2" boat anchor. Still have the 586. That was the last sheriff's auction here that I can recall where guns were sold.

Almost true for the Colt too.

Looks like mid 50's grips with the checkering going all the way to the top.

Same action as a Python too. Slick it up and then the only difference would be the barrel.

Your model 28 is from 1979 (approximately) and the Trooper from 1965 (ditto). The 28 originally had smaller service or Magna stocks, and the set you have (square butt fingergroove or Combat stocks) are not from the same era as the gun but much more valuable. Enjoy!

As Snapping Twig stated, the Trooper has the same action and grip frame as a Python. After the introduction of the Python, the Trooper Mk III was introduced on a totally different frame and action. These older Troopers used to be cheap, but since Pythons went off the charts, the Trooper and Colt 357 (similar to your Trooper, but a higher grade finish) have followed suit. I'd expect to pay $500-$700 for yours on Gunbroker, since the condition seems rough.

Thank you all, I appreciate the information I've gotten here. I intend to keep the Smith, and sell the Colt Trooper. I have always been, and always will be, a fan of the Smith & Wesson.
My first center fire, about half a century ago, was an 8-3/8" Model 27. I still have it even though it's become a safe queen.

Update on my "new to me"Trooper

I cleaned up the gun and the grips, and the grips came out better than the gun.

Question: I've heard that using naval jelly removes surface rust without harming the bluing. Is this myth? or is it true?

I tried to clean up the surface rust with a little elbow grease and oil, and a brass brush. I didn't want to get too carried away and destroy the bluing that is left on the gun.

I still don't like combat grips, my arthritis would rather have the target grips. No finger grooves anymore, for me.

The combat grips on the Model 28 are worth more than the price you paid for the gun so basically you got a free revolver for the value of the grips.

A brass brush will remove bluing; many recommend soaking in penetrating oil and using copper wool with light pressure for rust removal and happy remaining blue.

My feeble attempts to remove rust spots usually made the situation worse. An application of Kroil or CorrosionX and bronze wool or brass brush used lightly so as not to damage the surrounding area. Easy does it.

If you sell the stocks off of that HP, it will be a gun that pays you!

I'm still happy, happy, happy with my new guns from the auction, and spent a little time in my leather shop building a holster to carry them around while hunting this coming fall.

Here's my version of the "Tanker Holster" - fits all my large revolvers, including my new Highway Patrolman and Trooper. I've made a few modifications with the help of a nice beta tester on the east coast, and added a flap to protect the gun from the woods and weather.

Added on a little cartridge carrier - holds one speed strip, made one for a mag my friend on the "right coast" carries for his little Ruger.

Here's the pictures of my Highway Patrolman, with target grips, snugged up and ready to roll.

IMO, you did very well on the colt but beyond excellent on the HP. Even if prices were reversed, I'd prefer the Smith.
Congrats.
