Found a real nice 65-1
I just got this gun off layaway at my LGS.
P&R model 65 with 4" and SB. Just a beautiful gun. I can't pass up a good P&R K Frame.
The target stocks that came with it are in perfect shape. I have no idea if they are original to the gun or not. Gun required only minimal cleaning after I got it home. It didn't show much wear at all, and I suspect that it spent most of its life tucked away somewhere safe.
The serial number is 1D11843. Can someone tell me the date it shipped? Thanks.

Some 4" 65s did come with the larger target stocks. If I'm not mistaken, they may have been for a foreign order. Other posters will have more precise info.

Probably late 1976 or early 1977.

Now if I had found that M65, I would roundbutt it and carry it.

Congratulations. That's a nice looking revolver.
Re: serial # 1D11843
The SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson) says:
Models: 64, 65
1976-1977 1D1 - 1D30000
The SCSW makes no mention of target stocks for this model. I think it would likely have come with "checked walnut service stocks with S&W medallions" as mentioned in the SCSW. Nonetheless the target stocks on yours look very nice.

M-65
Bought one of those in July of 1976.....when I carried it out of the store, I told my buddy " I am going to shoot this thing until the barrel falls off". For the next twelve years I carried the gun everyday as my off duty gun, dry fired it everyday, shot it every week.....still have the gun and it has over 60,000 rds thru it. Competed with it in IPSC, bullseye and PPC. The barrel never fell off, but it wasn't from lack of me shooting it.
Carried it IWB in a S&W sheath holster with a clip, had Pach's on mine until the Houges came out. To this day, when I pull that 65 out of the safe, and wrap my hand around the stock's, it "speaks" to me, of days gone by and hours and hours of training and shooting.
You have a great revolver there....hope you can enjoy your's as much as I have mine. Good shooting

oh! oH! OH! Mr. Kotter! Mr. Kotter! I know this one!
Pinned and Recessed.
Means the frame is cross-drilled through the area where the barrel is threaded into it and the barrel is then secured with a pin inserted through the hole.
Recessed means the cartridge holes in the cylinder face are counter-bored to allow the rims of the cartridge cases to sit flush with the surface of the cylinder.

There are two reasons that make me doubt these stocks are original.
One has already been mentioned, and that is that the service revolvers (Model 10, Model 64, Model 65, etc.) usually shipped with service stocks and, at the time this gun was made, that meant Magna stocks.
Secondly, the target stocks on this gun have the speed loader cutout that probably was not yet current in 1976. Target stocks at that time still came with the football cut. IIRC the speed loader variety showed up on the K frames around 1978.
That said, they do look nice on this gun, and are certainly functional.

Ah. I actually know what pinned barrels and recessed chambers are. In fact, I am (just) old enough to remember when Smith switched to non-recessed cylinders. I was about 8 or 9 at the time, but really into guns even then.
Anyway, I hadn't seen the "P&R" abbreviation before. Thanks!

The stocks don't match the era of the gun, but they are great stocks and look good on it.
Real nice 65, they are great shooters.

Why not just buy a different snubby 357 like a 13 or a 19?
Save you money and not devalue a nice 4" 65.
