Greetings all. Long time lurker first time poster. I'm fairly new to this obsession. So after what seems like forever, I finally score a pretty much mint 10-6. Seems very few people want to give up the really nice ones. After holding one, I can pretty much understand why. Not so much as the faintest hint of a cylinder turn line. Woohoo! Couple things I noticed that maybe somebody might expand on? I own the latest edition of S&W Standard Catalog. I think this dates to 1978 but my 3D prefix serial number does not appear anywhere in the book. I did some digging and I read that 3D was just an extension of 2D that year? I also see that the serial number on the right grip is one consecutive digit off. Any body ever encounter this? The last digit on the frame is 4 and the last digit on the grip is 3. Thanks so much and happy to be here.

Several posters have reported having revolvers where the grips almost number to the frame SN but it was obvious that those grips had always been on the gun.

People make mistakes sometimes.

Thanks guys. This is actually the third Smith in 3 months. The first was a 36 no dash blue 2". The second was a 1958 model 17 no dash. The problem is they are all dead mint, zero turn lines. I'm afraid to shoot the dang things, well at least the model 17. It would feel almost criminal.

All the 3D serial numbers were produced in 1978, per Roy.
I'm sure the 4th Edition will correct this omission.

Thanks Muley Gil. I understand 1978 was a particularly busy year for Smith. If its anything like car production of that era, it was probably assembled on a Monday morning, a Friday or anytime after lunch. Drinking on and off the job was pretty much the norm.

Gorgeous Model 10-6! They're addicting and are commanding top $$$ across the country. They are sweet shooters.

I have one like that. The last digit of the serial number is an 8 on the M10-6 frame, but a 3 on the stocks. Actually, the 3 is rather deeply struck into the wood so at a glance it looks like an 8. I believe somebody at S&W wasn't wearing their glasses that day.

Welcome. That's a great looking model 10. I also have issues shooting mint looking guns. If they show some wear, good to go.
