Default Question on an Engraved Model 60

[IMG][/IMG]
I called smith and what I got from them was that it was from 1974.
I was told ben shostle engraved this.
I am curious if it was factory or aftermarket.
That has a lot to do with the price.
I will get a factory letter from them, will that tell me if it was engraved?
Any help would be appreciated, with thoughts, pricing, whatever.
Thanks

The factory letter 'should' tell you if was engraved there, but it will be a 5-6 month wait. If it is being sold as a factory engraved gun with a commensurate price, you may want to ask if you will get a partial refund should it not letter as factory work...this proposal may not be accepted. Others here may recognize the style and let you know more information.

Ben Shostle did excellent work, but he did not engrave for S&W. The Model 60 was engraved after it was shipped as a plain revolver.

Why not?

I'm not much of a fan of engraved guns, especially for EDC; but if that's what the buyer likes, it's his money.

I pocket carry a J and don't show it to people (haven't had to so far), so it isn't my cup of Ovaltine, but then I don't get invited to the better class of barbecue.

Get out a 10x magnifier. Look on the frame just above the trigger, either left or right, I do not recall. That is where Ben Shostle usually "micro-signs" as siimply "SHOSTLE".

Ben Shostle was a Master Engraver. His work is collected vigorously by certain people who appreciate his work and style. If it "is", factually, Shostle engraved it will likely be worth more than a factory engraved same model.

My guess is the engraving was commissioned post factory. While the craftsman did a great job, I will presume the owner also liked have baked cookies. Nice gun but even being a fan of engraved S&W revolvers that one turns me off. hardcase60

The letters are much faster now. I received one not too long ago in about 3 weeks.
