That is a really nice ad. Thanks for posting it. I always carry my model 60 (3 inch bbl.) with me in the woods or hiking trails.
You hardly see such nice detail and art work in gun ads these days.

Very early ad! The all-stainless internals didn't stick around very long before S&W went back to carbon steel internals. The stainless hammer, trigger and springs simply weren't adequately durable.

I remember that ad. I think the M-60 was a crucial advance in firearms. I still think it should be the basic snub .38 in one's arsenal.

And the full-lugged M-60-4 with target sights is one of the finest small trail guns yet made. I think S&W erred in making the J-MAG versions. The gun is too small for use with .357 ammo. Ruger's SP-101 has the edge if you need a small, durable .357 that handles recoil relatively well, considering.

Did any of you read the Matt Helm book, "The Betrayers"? It appeared soon after the Model 60, and featured that gun.

I also remember seeing that add when it first came out...

As to the new Magnum J-Frames...my favorite J is the 60-10 3" full underlug .357 with adjustable sights... Have also got one of 60-1s with adjustable sights...

That is exactly why I bought my M60. Now... if I can just find a nice 2" model 63 to keep it company...

I got one when they first came out.
After an instance, I sold it.

Great pic
I agree with Noah. It really does look like art. If got one of these in a deal and the person says "oh by the way here is the original ad when I got it" oh baby that would make a deal go from just fair to awesome for me.
Alk the info about the internals not being durable I would never have known. Thanks

The ad shows a lot of promise, but I feel the Model 60 really hit its peak when the Model 60-4 came out with 3" full underlug barrel and adjustable sights. The former gives better sighting at greater than belly-to-belly shooting ranges as well as better control, and the latter makes it possible to match the gun to the ammo you desire rather than being limited to going the other way. Just my 2¢, but I hope I'm right... I had a hard time finally acquiring that dash four!

I'm still trying to figure out why they left that awesome gun out in the rain.
