10-5 with 6" barrel. Just because.
I've been toying with adding a long barreled Model 10 to my collection for a few years. They're just neat. I picked this one up today. It's a 10-5, and the serial number is D51**** which gives it a date around 73/74. All the numbers match. Some minor surface wear, bit in very good mechanical condition. Now I need a Model 10 snubbie.

Wow. The numbers match on those Pachmayr stocks? Cool!
Just kidding, of course. Nice revolver. I have an S prefix M&P with the 6" barrel, but have never owned a Model 10 with one. Might be kind of fun to dink around with . . .

You got me there for a second. The Pachs came with it. I also own a Model 1905 3rd Change M&P with the 6" barrel, but I've wanted one of the more modern Model 10's with the long tube. I shoot my older M&P occassionally, but I perfer to go easy on the old girl. This Model 10 can withstand a bit more use I think. Also I just like the 6" barrel configuration. Go figure.

I prefer the 5" barrels on the M&Ps of any age. They balance better for me than the 6" and I tend to shoot them better than my 4" guns.
I even have a Combat Masterpiece with a factory 5" barrel. It is among my favorite sidearms. Here it is in all its worn, but resplendent, glory.
Here is a postwar M&P revolver (ancestor to the Model 10). It has a 5" barrel, and shipped in March, 1946.
Oh, what the heck. Here is another 5" revolver; this one is a Model 27-2.
See? I told you I like revolvers with 5" barrels!!!

Oh fiddle. Gotta throw in one more. This one is from the mid-1920s, a .38 M&P square butt. It was one of my first M&P acquisitions and I've enjoyed sending lots of lead down its barrel over the years.
At one point, I gave it to one of my sons. Then, after kicking my own butt for months, I went over and offered to trade him a Model 10-6 4" for it. I even threw in a hundred bucks to sweeten the pot. He said that wasn't necessary, but heck, he's my kid so I insisted.

Not the greatest photo, but a couple of my 5" models - both Colt and S&W. The M&P is an S prefix made in 48. The Heavy Duty is from 37 and the Colt OP is one of the British Contract OP's in 38/200 manufactured in 41. The other OP is a 4" commercial from 35. I understand your fondness for the 5" barrel.

I have several 4 & 5 inch M&P's. Can't really tell that much difference between them as far as shooting goes. I think that the 6 inch would be the better range gun. I need to buy one and test out my theory.

I prefer my 5 inch Model 10, but I am able to shoot my 6 inch as accurately as my K-38. Unfortunately, POI is high and right from this gun.

You are a really good photographer too. When it comes to the post-war guns, the 10-5 is better than what came before and much better than what came after. There's just something about the 10-5. . .probably because I carried one when I was in college and that makes me partial. The 6 inch barrel has always been my favorite too. I guess that makes me an exception.

I love mine! I just had my 1969 10-5 6" out to the range a couple of weeks ago. I have since replaced the stocks in this photo with a set of period correct set of non-diamond PC magnas:

For those who said I needed to get rid of the rubber and put some wood on it. Here you go. The target grips are period correct. They came off of my 19-3 which was manufactured in 1974.
