Help Identify Mod 17-3
Hello S&W Experts
I came upon this site after trying to research a revolver that was passed on to me by my father after his death in 1993.
It is a S&W .22 Long Rifle CTG Model 17-3. Serial :8K51***. Both the Serial & Mod are located behind the yoke. Hand Ejector. It has grooved wood target grips that cover up part of the SW logo. Target hammer, 6" barrel, blue carbon frame, 6 shot. Adjustable rear sites.
It has been kept cased in very good condition. I will attach a few photos in hope I get some responses of the pistols history and approx. value.
Thank you for your knowledge
regards,
Chuck (upsetter)

Welcome to the Forum,
Nice looking Model 17-3. The serial# dates to about 1975 according to the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition. The revolver looks to be in very nice condition. Someone else will be along shortly to help you put a price on it.

Welcome! Its official name (along with model 17-3) is K-22 Masterpiece. It looks lightly used and is probably a $600-650 gun, more if you have the original box and contents. Enjoy!

In its day the K22 was one of the premier target revolvers and your Dad's gun is basically the same as those earlier revolvers. That particular example is a little more valuable to shooters who want what is called the "3 Ts" (target hammer, trigger, and stocks), which your gun has. I agree with the value stated and I would guess the value of the gun will continue to appreciate as long as it is maintained. K22s have always been in demand and probably always will be. Especially since it was your Dad's revolver, I'd encourage you to hang on to it. You've got something very nice to remember him - and to enjoy.

It's a dead ringer for my 1974 17-3, except yours has nicer stocks and less blue wear.
Mine has seen tens of thousands of rounds.

The wear on the ejector rod says that it was enjoyed a little more than "lightly used"...and that's a good thing. ;-) Still worth every nickel of the estimate.
Target hammer and target trigger.Actually a "3T" gun with the target stocks.I have a virtually identical gun(17-4).A favorite of mine.

I'm not as knowledgeable as these guys but I just finished shopping on Gunbroker for a gun like that. Spent months comparing prices and i would agree with the others estimates. Keep it if you can.
