Sounds like you already know what you have. It's a Model 60 based on the J frame. In carbon steel called the Model 37 Chief's Special.

R19695 would date to 1969.
The Model 60 is also referred to as the .38 Chiefs Special Stainless.

You have a Model 60 with no dash after the model number also referred to as a Model 60 no-dash.

The Model 60 no-dash was produced 1965-1972. If original it should have wood (walnut) Magna stocks. Diamond centered stocks were eliminated in 1968. If original your stocks would have the matching serial # of the gun stamped on the inside of the left grip (stock).

The 78292 number you refer to would be an assembly number and their nomenclature seems to remain a mystery.

SaxonPig misstated the model 37 was the carbon steel (i.e. blue and nickel finishes) version of the Model 60. I think it was just a typo on his part. It is the Model 36 that is correctly the carbon steel version of the Model 60. The Model 37 is the lightweight alloy version of the Models 36 and 60.
