Default recoil plate question

There's a 25-2 I'm considering buying. The gun looks to be in overall very nice condition. The seller says he bought it new and he's hardly fired it. What causes the little circles on the recoil plate that look like the back of a brass case, and what causes them? This gun only has one at 4:00 as you are looking at the recoil plate, and that's not where the round being fired is located. I've always wondered about those circles (don't see them much on blued guns--mostly stainless).

Thanks,

Paul Moore

Probably just "peening" from the bottom of the casing during recoil. The casings in each chamber bounce around during firing and when the gun is being carried. More of a "stain" or burnish really......just evidence of contact between the casing and the breechface.

Take a look at it with a magnifier, it should be superficial only.

Great info--thanks. And it makes total sense. Usually what you see is the circle from the rim of the case and a center circle from the primer, so it probably is just the back of the cases slightly banging the recoil plate.

Thanks!!

Takes a lot of brass to suggest that; if it's the case, we're all going to be shells of our former selves. Cartridge.
