Default Itch to buy a 66.

I have been looking at S&W 66 2 1/2 inch revolvers for the last couple of months. Bid on one on GB and it went for $855.00 plus shipping and FFL fee's. Others are running in the $750.00 to $800.00 range plus shipping and fee's.
I kind of have a problem with buying sight unseen also.
A LGS has a 66-2 with a Galco shoulder holster rig and a Galco OWB holster. The 66 has the original standard walnut grips. I think I can get the whole deal for $850.00 OTD. Should I bite?

What are the reasons that you would not buy it? You did not mention condition. Like new? Well used but not abused? Are the holsters in great condition or beat to heck? Condition of all items obviously is very important.

You have clearly been watching the market for months so you know if the price is high or not. If you think the price is high, why don't you offer what you think is fair?

I am not a fan of snubbies with adjustable sights, but with the extras the asking price does not seem outrageous. Assuming great condition of all items in the package ...

Adding to Jack Flash's good comments..............

As a guess the holsters new would run ....... $150-200

So $650 for the gun .... 2.5" if LNIB or very good........ an OK to good price.......but not "great"........ in today's market.

Do you want those holsters? .... as a general rule around here on "sale or trade" to a LGS....... price or value given by the LGS is for the gun only.... holsters are a throw in/no real value given........ its hard to get a buyer who will want the same "package" that has been traded in............

how long has it been in the shop?...

IMHO the holsters are dead weight on the sale.....LGS just trying to drive up the price

I'd offer on the gun and dicker on the holsters "thrown in"..... if you want them.........

Course I've got my 2 1/2 inch 66 and 19s and a big box-o-holsters..... so I can be choosy...

good luck

With the rigs thrown in I say that is an OK price. I have a shoulder holster for snub K's. It gets used very sparingly in winter time.

I paid $750 OTD for a 66-2 2-1/2" a couple of months ago. The gun is in very nice shape, mechanically and cosmetically. Had Pacs on it which I replaced with aftermarket stocks. Not a great buy, but I had been looking for one for a while. I like the -2 both for the smooth combat trigger and for not being recessed. That way I can tell at a glance if it's loaded.
Very please with the gun. It is very accurate out to 25 yards and beyond, despite the short sight radius.

I just purchased a 66 from a friend.... Condition about a 98%. It had Pacs as grips which I didn't like. Bought checkered wood magna grips ($35) plus a Galco holster ($78) plus the gun at $625, making my investment $738 without any FFL or shipping. If you like it at your local store I would think the price is fine in today's market

Sounds like you have the green light to buy from the forum...such enablers!

It is a nice revolver and typically I have seen $700 and up at the gun shows that I have attended here in S. WI without any extras. Of course, these days gun show sellers are quite familiar with GB prices. In general, I add $70 to any GB price for shipping and my FFL fees. And because I too want to handle the thing first, I have never bought anything off of GB. But I don't collect like so many do here.

Sounds like you want it and you get to inspect it before you drop the money. Bam Bam might be onto something. If you do not like the holster then trying to bargain a bit won't hurt.

And if you do get it...STOP looking at GB for their prices (unless you are looking for another one), enjoy shooting it and never look back. I actually had the original wood grips on mine until this year. I put Pachmayr Compac grips (SK/C) on it. Very nice fit in the hand. But I am partial to rubber. Started in 1980 when I and all of the other new hires put Pach Presentation grips on our issued model 19's.

If that snubby is in very good to excellent condition, I'd dicker a bit on the price. It seems high, but that's only because of the holsters. If the gun and holsters are like new and the holsters suit your personal needs, a figure of $750 might be more in line with what I would personally offer. But I'm not you. If the gun has been sitting in the LGS long, they might take your offer, or counter offer as a compromise. Good luck, and realize that isn't the only Mod. 66 snubby in the world.

Well, I went this morning and bought the package. BTW, the holsters are like new with no signs of usage. The 66 is like new also with a very lite ring around the cylinder. The grips are like new also. Thanks for the replies and I am happy with the deal after taking the gun apart and cleaning it...which it did not really need, I found out. Thanks again.

I think you made a good deal. If you decide you really don't want the holsters, like-new holsters seem to sell pretty quickly in the forum classifieds for $50 to $100 each. That could bring the cost of ownership of this fine handgun into true bargain territory!

From CA to TN, you're lucky to find a nice 66 2.5" under $800. Ymmv
