Looking at a clean 36 at my LGS, tag says 1963 manufacture, shouldn't it have a pinned barrel????

Yes it should have a pinned barrel and diamond stocks. I would be very interested in a 63 model 36. I am a 63 myself. Please let me know if you don't want to purchase it.

Yes, a 1962 would have a serial with 6 digits no letters

Did you get the serial off the heel yet?

S&W used numbers until around 1969 then added the J prefix, like J 123456, the J also floated to the right during the 70's like 1 J 2345, then 12 J 345,
All S&W's began using the Alpha prefix system around 82 like AAA, AAB 1234

I'd caution you to get the serial number at least so it can be checked out here before you accept the dealer's tag that it is a 1963 issued revolver. It very well may be, then again ..... ?

Non pinned barrel probably more like 1983.

No chance they made a non pinned 36 in 1962.

Serial # 3538XX shipped in 1964 for a reference point.
SCS&W 3rd edition page 399 shows serial # 295000 shipped in 1962.

Serial # 34695 would be 1953 -54
